If you want to learn more about why and how air disasters occur, take a look at the Youtube videos made by Allec Joshua Ibay. He combines Flight Simulator 2004 with the black box recordings to recreate the problems/issues that led to crashes and near crashes. He's covered crashes from the 70s to present.

Very interesting stuff. In some cases the downright negligence of the flight crew and/or the mechanic crew is appalling.

This team embodied everything good about football and what the sport is supposed to be. Less than a decade ago they were 3 leagues down and a new club with no where to go but up. Then 5 days ago, they qualified for the finals of the second biggest club tournament in South America. Literally every football fan in Brazil loved this team and they were even cheered for making the finals by the opposing fans in their stadium, again, just 5 days ago. This is absolutely devastating for the town that is currently dealing with a terrible flood and can't even properly mourn this tragedy as they are trying to save their houses and families right now.

This is them celebrating making it to the finals of the Sul-Americana. https://twitter.com/ChapecoenseReal/status/803587792588722176?lang=pt

Such a heartbreaking tragedy.

Everyone laughed at Fergy when he started a thread about this very topic regarding the NFL. Time for a Fergy apology thread.

Why should anyone apologize for Fergy? Let him do his own.

And interesting how teams are willing to lend players. Not sure what NFL would do in this situation, supplemental draft?

"Team replacement" was considered in the 70's.

Northwest Airlines lost an empty 727 on the way to Buffalo to pick up the Colts, after our game. It crashed very close to West point NY, and that incident brought up the big "what if" as to what if the team had been on board? As I recall, Pete Roselle indicated that each team would be required to contribute an equal number of players to back fill the lost team. The theory was that the schedule would continue as normal. That's 40 years ago, and I have no idea if it's still on the books, or even if Roger has ever considered it. It's very unlikely, but it could happen!

The Avro RJ85 crashed due to electro-magnetic pulse (EMP), endured as it crossed over the plate border between the S American Plate and the North Andes Plate. Some assign the North Andes Plate to the S American Plate, and others assign it to the Caribbean Plate, as it has rock attachments to both. Though this region has not had heavy EMP before, the S American Roll is on the move, with an aggressive uptick. Pilots would be wise to avoid this plate border if possible, as it is subject to pressure from more than one source, and thus is likely to be under almost constant EMP in the future.
