So lets trade for Brady!

Still doesnt explain the dropoff from last yr to this yr. same QB.

There is no drop off except that this season isnt over. He had 77tgts last year, or roughly 4.8tgts/game. He has 57 so far, or roughly 5.2tgts/game.

The main issue in Clay's performance is the QB who simply REFUSES to throw him the ball when he is wide open. Or waits way too long when he does actually throw the ball Clay's way.

There was a Buffalo News article about this exact topic last week. It has been the premise for multiple All-22 articles.

Clay is getting open. That much is obvious. He just isnt getting the ball.

Clay is clearly playing hurt and has the whole season. Due to whatever it may be , he has lost a bit in the quicks, speed, vertical leap and suddenness departments. This has not helped his cause. He is still blocking at a very high level. He does get open at times and is not seen, but also it appears he is far from the primary option on most passing plays and for a reason.

He has played like he is hurt every game. Maybe he is hurt. Not what we paid for. He used to be wide open down the middle and now he doesn't get open like that any more. Time to shop.

The All 22 just doesn't support this analysis.

He has played like he's hurt because he IS playing hurt.

Still gets open far, far, FAR more often than not.

And is an integral part of the success of our league leading running game.

People busting on Clay's game don't have a grasp on some of the intricacies of his game and what he's asked to do on a weekly basis.

Charles Clay, one of the Bills most expensive FA signings in the last few years, is on a steady decline that the Dolphins luckily missed out on. Not only have his numbers only gotten worse every year, the whispers about his bad knee that "needs draining" and on the eye test, he looks slow and ineffective both as a runner and pass catcher. His YPC this year has dipped below 10 yards!

By the numbers:

2013: 102 tgt's, 69 catches for 759 yards, 6 TD's, 11 YPC, 67.6% catch rate over 16 games

2014: 84 tgt's, 58 carthes for 605 yards, 3 TD's, 10.4 YPC, 69% catch rate over 14 games

2015: 77 tgt's, 51 catches for 528 yards, 3 TD's, 10.4 YPC, 66.2% catch rate over 13 games

2016: (so far) 57 tgt's, 36 catches for 323 yards, 0 TD's, 9 YPC, 63.2% catch rate over 11 games

Is Clay's lack of productivity something to watch going forward? With him basically being uncuttable due to our restructure of his deal, can this team afford a top 5 TE contract albatross around their neck for 300 yards and 0 TD's in 11 games? Do his contributions in the run game justify his bloated contract?

Who is his QB? A guy that looks to run before pass 80% of the time.

Let Clay play with a QB who's not afraid to use the middle of the field and this is a non-existant thread.

Bingo, Clay's issues are QB related. Not hard to figure out, really.

Yup. Whats our strength? The run game. Keep improving the Oline and defense.

The oline has been good this year. No need to improve it.

Can we get out from under that contract?

Nope. Too much money has already been paid to him. The unaccounted for amount accelerates if he's cut or traded. The structure was terrible from the team's standpoint. The Bills could get out, but it'd hurt. The (relatively) good news is that it'll hurt less and less after each season.

Less to do with Clay and more to do with the inability of the QB to get him the ball in the middle of the field were TEs work.

But let's blame Clay it's easier

Clay is made of clay. Big blunder here, huge contract, not used, a QB who can't/won't throw to him, terrible pass catcher and falls down when you look at him. Who is to blame for this huge mistake, Greg Roman?? On the other hand O'Leary looks to be the kind of TE that this offense can utilize.

RT needs to be upgraded. But I agree the oline has been good overall.

Agreed the line has been playing well, even going back to last year. BUT Incognito isnt getting any younger, Wood is nearing the end, and RT could use a minor upgrade.

I wouldnt hate if they brought in more interior talent to develop.
