26CornerBlitz Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Exactly... he'd already be injured Okay.
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 targets. look at the target numbers and there's your answer. the QB doesn't even look at him
Coach Tuesday Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 I really think he's hurt. Anyhow, next year's draft features a bevy of quality tight ends and I'd be fine with the Bills picking one in the 18-25 range.
BillnutinHouston Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Watch his block on Shady's 75 yard run.
BringBackOrton Posted November 28, 2016 Author Posted November 28, 2016 targets. look at the target numbers and there's your answer. the QB doesn't even look at him What does targets have to do with YPC?
NoSaint Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 I really think he's hurt. Anyhow, next year's draft features a bevy of quality tight ends and I'd be fine with the Bills picking one in the 18-25 range. A young guy paired with him wouldn't be a bad thing. Gives the you guy some time to pick up various roles if clay can be a good contributor after an offseason healing up. He's here 2 years either way though and I doubt we make a FA splash at the position until he's gone so draft is where to look. If you think we keep TT, adding a WR, RT and TE in the first 3 rounds would be realistic and a vet safety in FA wouldn't be unrealistic in securing value and filling holes
Bleeding Bills Blue Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 He's blocking well. Just doesn't seem very dynamic or athletic so far. Like an old school TE back in the day. Safety valve and blocking.
Beef Jerky Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 He is turning into Chandler... This team should stick to blocking TEs I don't think they will ever get a good one.
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 What does targets have to do with YPC? Nothing but his overall production's going to suck if he's not getting the ball thrown his way.
quinnearlysghost88 Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Charles Clay, one of the Bills most expensive FA signings in the last few years, is on a steady decline that the Dolphins luckily missed out on. Not only have his numbers only gotten worse every year, the whispers about his bad knee that "needs draining" and on the eye test, he looks slow and ineffective both as a runner and pass catcher. His YPC this year has dipped below 10 yards! By the numbers: 2013: 102 tgt's, 69 catches for 759 yards, 6 TD's, 11 YPC, 67.6% catch rate over 16 games 2014: 84 tgt's, 58 carthes for 605 yards, 3 TD's, 10.4 YPC, 69% catch rate over 14 games 2015: 77 tgt's, 51 catches for 528 yards, 3 TD's, 10.4 YPC, 66.2% catch rate over 13 games 2016: (so far) 57 tgt's, 36 catches for 323 yards, 0 TD's, 9 YPC, 63.2% catch rate over 11 games Is Clay's lack of productivity something to watch going forward? With him basically being uncuttable due to our restructure of his deal, can this team afford a top 5 TE contract albatross around their neck for 300 yards and 0 TD's in 11 games? Do his contributions in the run game justify his bloated contract? Actually his targets are down. From 6+ a game to 5.1 this year. Add 11-12 more targets to his numbers to get to a 6 tpg. That could be 100+ yards, which would dramatically change this argument. Especially if one of those was a TD. It wouldn't be a good case for decline.
8-8 Forever? Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Let Clay play with a QB who's not afraid to use the middle of the field and this is a non-existant thread. yep. my understanding is if you look at the all-22, he is open often downfield but TT doesn't pull the trigger...
BringBackOrton Posted November 28, 2016 Author Posted November 28, 2016 Nothing but his overall production's going to suck if he's not getting the ball thrown his way. If his overall production sucked, but he was still efficient when targeted, I'd agree it was a lack of targets. That's clearly not the case. Actually his targets are down. From 6+ a game to 5.1 this year. Add 11-12 more targets to his numbers to get to a 6 tpg. That could be 100+ yards, which would dramatically change this argument. Especially if one of those was a TD. It wouldn't be a good case for decline. See above.

I would much prefer the Bills pick one up in the 32-ish range :-) I would go: 1st rd- S/TE 2nd rd- TE/S 3rd rd- QB 4th rd- backup C/G combo player. Wood/Richie not getting younger. 5th rd- WR Pick up a veteran RT, reasonable CB, and bring back Woods if possible. Edited November 28, 2016 by BuffalothruMyVeins
CommonCents Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 I hate the idea of using a top pick on a TE, that position seems to be one of the most difficult for a player to transition into. I'd much rather solidify the oline than mess around with a TE.

johnwalter Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 tight end class this year is the best of the last decade.
White Linen Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Charles Clay was never that great as a TE. His value was in his versatility. We thought we might see him in the backfield as a h back or full back or in different looks where we could split him out vs a LB and have a matchup advantage. They don't use him like that at all, just as a plain old TE. Issue 2 is that we stink at throwing the football. Worst in the league. Tyrod is good at running but he plays QB unfortunately for him I rarely agree with your posts but I think you nailed it on this one.
billsfan_34 Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Let Clay play with a QB who's not afraid to use the middle of the field and this is a non-existant thread. Bingo! I dont know how many times ive seen Clay wide open on seam and flags and Tyrod doesnt see him or even look that way.
Fadingpain Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 If Brady is throwing the ball to Clay, we wouldn't be talking about how his knee needs draining or whatever else. Tyrod doesn't seem to see him or like to throw to him, and when he does, ball placement is rarely good enough to permit YAC.
bobobonators Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 So lets trade for Brady! If Brady is throwing the ball to Clay, we wouldn't be talking about how his knee needs draining or whatever else. Tyrod doesn't seem to see him or like to throw to him, and when he does, ball placement is rarely good enough to permit YAC. Still doesnt explain the dropoff from last yr to this yr. same QB.
