This post is not intended to offend anyone....however in our over sensitive country... for whatever reason, it is bound to touch a nerve on someone.

SO, if you are offended......me sorry.

If a black person is born and raised in the United States of America....and is called "African American"....

What is a black person born and raised in Africa called?

I am guessing just plain "African"...right?

Ok....what do you call a white person born and raised in Africa?

I suppose they would be "African"?

Or are they referred to as "Anglo Africans"?

If Gary Player(PGA Member) were to obtain American Citizenship, he would technically be African-American. Isn't that weird?

I just know that the term was a good way to increase the lengths of papers in middle and high school....

And I would say that immigrants from Africa can acceptably called "African" just like someone who moved from Japan can acceptably be called "Asian."

I don't know if I'd use the term 'offended', but the term "Afro-American" bothers me. (I'm white, American & of English descent, FWIW.)

I believe the term A-A is exclusively used to refer to the race of Negro, much like the term 'black', whereas 'white' is used to describe Caucasians.

Africa is a continent. African of course refers to things of that continent. It doesn't correlate w/ the characteristics of any particular race.

I suspect that most people that refer to themselves, or are referred to as A-A have to go far back in their family tree to find native Africans.

What about someone like Charlize Theron (yum, BTW)? Born & raised in S.Africa & AFAIK if not naturalized, certianly seems to spend a fair amount of time in the US.

For that matter, if that same A-A moved to Europe, what would they be referred to then?

Same person, it just doesn't make since for a different appellation.

Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attack, an editorial appeared in my local paper. It gist of it was- No more hyphens. No more African-American, Cuban-American, whatever-American.

Simply American.

I wish we could adopt this mind set.

Good thought, though I tend to think of us all as Buffalo Bills red, white and blue.

there is a diffrence in the "accepted term" and the "technical term".

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony

Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord, why don’t we?

We all know that people are the same where ever we go

There is good and bad in ev’ryone,

We learn to live, we learn to give

Each other what we need to survive together alive.

I'm more peach colored. If my Irish skin gets exposed to the sun too much I'm definitely red. Would that make me an Indian...errrr.... Native American?

Yes. We are Americans one and all. It's the malcontents of society that feel some sort of need to cause strife.
