BringBackFergy Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Sammy is out. Salas is out. Goodwin is fast and small. Woodsy is great but small. It appeared that Clay was spread out wide on several plays last game. In fact, I think our offense operates better when the defense is spread out more. Clay has the height, size, strength (note I didn't say speed) to be a great possession receiver (comparable to a modern day Frank Lewis or John Stallworth). Yeah he might be a good blocker, but we have two new TE's and a shortage of sizable WR's. Maybe he is slowly becoming a Gronk/Jimmy GRaham type TE...spreading him out more. I'd rather let him stay outside or slot full time.
BringBackFergy Posted October 6, 2016 Author Posted October 6, 2016 Then who plays TE? The Golden Bear
Buffalo_Stampede Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 He does line up outside and off the line many times. No need to switch positions.
NoSaint Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Then who plays TE? if the discussion is simply splitting him wide more often.... well... thats kind of the nature of playing TE these days.
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Leave him where he is, but certainly design plays to utilize like a WR on some occasions. Realistically it doesn't matter what you call him, just throw him the ball more and hope he catches it.
Big Turk Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) I'd love to see him split out in space more like a lot of teams use their TE's Edited October 6, 2016 by matter2003
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 if the discussion is simply splitting him wide more often.... well... thats kind of the nature of playing TE these days. However to phrase it, clay seems like he offers a favorable mismatch outside on smaller corners and they should exploit it more often.

BringBackFergy Posted October 6, 2016 Author Posted October 6, 2016 They'd have to pay him more. That's the Jimmy Graham argument right? I seem to recall that happening in NO
The Big Cat Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) That's the Jimmy Graham argument right? I seem to recall that happening in NO That's what I was thinking of. It's relative to the franchise tag, though. Edited October 6, 2016 by The Big Cat
BringBackOrton Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 That's the Jimmy Graham argument right? I seem to recall that happening in NO You move Charles Clay to the outside, he starts demanding WR money and Sammy walks feeling slighted. Not worth the risk.
ChanOverChin Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Because he's not a WR, duh!! Just because Clay can be moved to the outside on occasion doesn't mean that he should now play WR. The Pats do it with Gronk all of the time. It's a way to exploit a mismatch. However, the Bills need Clay to play the TE position because he's the best that they have at that position by far.

Marty McFly Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 He lines up outside and in the slot enough to not have to make the move to WR. Plus hes a decent blocking TE too.
Malazan Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 He does line up outside and off the line many times. No need to switch positions. ^This. Why change his positions when you can just play him how you want?
