LB3
I'm a sucker for the Friday the 13th movies. I don't know what it is--I know they're bad, but I still like 'em. That cheesy teen slasher formula just does it for me. Exactly. There is nothing better than watching Jason punch someone's head off or zip a teenager up in a sleeping bag and slam them against a tree like a rug. Indy Dave
This is the best time of year for horror movies. There are a million to choose from and 95% are garbage. Here are some obscure ones that I like If you like horror mixed with humor, check out Tucker and Dale vs Evil. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1465522/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Repulsion. The most psychologically tense movie I've ever seen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059646/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_25 Burnt Offerings. This is a sentimental pick for me. Its the first movie that scared the crap out of me when I was little. Bette Davis and Karen Black are scary no matter what theyre doing. And the image of the weird chauffer guy haunts me to this day. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074258/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 And Then There Were None. This 1945 version of the Agatha Christie novel is the best. Really fun. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037515/?ref_=nv_sr_2 What are some of your favorites? Weird that you posted this. Sunday night I googled Burnt Offerings. Not sure why that popped in my head. Watched about a 2 1/2 minute trailer. Scared the crap out of me as a kid. The chauffeur gave me nightmares and I got major chills when he appeared in the trailer. Also liked The Exorcism of Emily Rose, as someone else in the thread mentioned. Same for the original Halloween and The Shining. Other somewhat recent movies I liked were The Strangers and The Conjuring. Recently watched Conjuring II. Didn't like it near as much. Azalin
There have only been three movies that truly creeped me out over the years. In chronological order: 1) The Haunting (1963) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/ 2) The Exorcist (1973) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047/ 3) The Ring (2002) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298130/ That being said, horror is by far my favorite genre, so I like an awful lot of horror movies. The only sub-genre I don't care for is slasher films, excluding Hitchcock's classic Psycho (it's just too good a suspense movie, despite being the original slasher film.) Honorable mentions as genuine classics are the original Universal versions of Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Mummy, along with the 1922 version of Nosferatu. I like a lot of the old British Hammer films as well. Edited October 5, 2016 by Azalin

Wooderson
Psycho was great the first time I watched it. I just watched that Exorcism III scene that someone posted and it felt incredibly similar to the scene in Psycho when the detective is walking up the stairs. The music really nails it. The Descent was a pretty good scary movie. Had some good jump scenes as well as a nightmare for those who have claustrophobia. The Shining. The Omen scared me pretty good when I was young. The nurse hanging herself really hit me hard as a child. Edited October 5, 2016 by Wooderson

Chef Jim
Freaks. This is more creepy than scary but still........ BTW I just realized it was directed and produced by Tod Browning who directed the 1932 version of Dracula with Bela Lugosi. Captain Caveman
Besides the usual favorites, here are some (I think) under-appreciated ones. Friday the 13th IV - I'm partial to this because it's the first real horror movie I ever saw, and I couldn't close my eyes in the shower when washing my hair for months, but it's also got Crispin Glover. The Host - Korean film, I think you can stream it on Netflix, really well done monster movie. Let The Right One In - watch the original if you can, not the american remake, although I had heard the remake's not bad. Alien Resurrection - I know most people hate the 3rd and 4th installments in the series, but I like them. I especially like the comic book kind of feel to this, and Ron Perlman is great. Zombieland - more funny than scary, but it's a great movie to watch this time of year. Tusk - Kevin Smith made a good movie again. Made me squirm and laugh. The Thing - John Carpenter version - probably not under-appreciated, but I didn't see anyone else mention it.
Dante
Alien Aliens The Exorcist Bills/Giants Superbowl Alien and the Exorcist at the top of my list. Although the Bills/Giants was creepy, don't you think the sequels are even more frightening?

thebandit27
I liked High Tension very much. I'll have to check out those others. I'd rate High Tension as a 6/10 on the intensity scale. Inside is an 8.5, and is more stylized. Martyrs is a 10, and is completely raw. Brutal, brutal films, but incredibly well made
