I doubt most ST coaches are even aware of how that works!
justnzane Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 That is a curious turn of events. I doubt most ST coaches are even aware of how that works! They are, I'd bet. The problem is two fold. If the returner misses, it is a live ball. secondly, if he goes out and touches it first while in field of play, it is illegal touching
BillsFan130 Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 The NFL has to have the most complex/ ridiculous rule book
DallasMac Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Somebody did this against us a while back. I want to say it was the patriots.
mrags Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Somebody did this against us a while back. I want to say it was the patriots.actually I think it was the Jets with Rex as their HC. Back in about 2008-2012 ish.
Reks Ryan Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Yes Leon Washington with Jets did it to Bills in 2008 http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/leon-washington-trick-treat-kickoff-bills-article-1.333827

If the returner misses, it is a live ball. secondly, if he goes out and touches it first while in field of play, it is illegal touching Apparently not. During the kickoff on Sunday, the Detroit Lions kicked the ball near the 3-yard line, but instead of picking up the ball or letting it roll into the end zone, Montgomery purposely stepped out of bounds before diving on top of the ball while his feet remained out of bounds.

I think he meant if he went out first and then came back in bounds if he couldn't reach it from out of bounds
dulles Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I think he meant if he went out first and then came back in bounds if he couldn't reach it from out of bounds Definitely. While on the subject of kickoff rules, does anyone know if the NFL will change the 25 yard touchback rule during the season. It seems like more returns are happening. That's a bad thing in today's NFL, right?

PromoTheRobot Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Somebody did this against us a while back. I want to say it was the patriots. It was. It's not that obscure a rule. It's been done in college.
Bubba Gump Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Surprised Belichick and the Pats* don't do this every time.
Estelle Getty Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Definitely. While on the subject of kickoff rules, does anyone know if the NFL will change the 25 yard touchback rule during the season. It seems like more returns are happening. That's a bad thing in today's NFL, right? No. Goodell said they won't change it in season.
Not at the table Karlos Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Somebody did this against us a while back. I want to say it was the patriots. patriots Def used to do it idr if it was against us. The Jets did it a bunch once against us, Leon Washington used to do it a lot. Surprised everyone is making a big deal about it.
plenzmd1 Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 (edited) can someone explain why this is not illegal touching? I am assuming it is because he stays out of bounds? That was the call on the dead patriot in the OT game in Brady's first year. Edited September 27, 2016 by plenzmd1

26CornerBlitz Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 The 1st time I remember this being done was by Leon Washington for the Jets, IIRC, he did it against the Bills.
