eball Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 ...it was obvious yesterday. Amazing what being healthy does for a player. Enjoy Pats*** week, fans.
Chandler#81 Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Played at his Pro bowl level -including tackles for losses. Damn Dareus..
flutie5 Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Kyle William played extremely well yesterday.
Nanker Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Last year in The League. He's old. Put him out to pasture. #the"realists"onthisboard
Nihilarian Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 He is a pro bowler when used in a one-gap 3-4 like he was yesterday and he is a bad fit in a 3-4 two-gap like he was mostly used in last year. There was a real reason why the team fell on it's face in sacks last year and it had nothing to do with the players.

Rex has a healthy dose of both 1-gap and 2-gap in his system. IMO, it was more confusion about what his play-to-play role was last year than a mismatched scheme. He 2-gapped at times yesterday and was fine--it's about what he's doing 80% of the time that matters IMO.
r00tabaga Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 I was very proud of both him and his brother Aaron yesterday.
TPS Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 (edited) Let's hope he makes it through a full season this year. If not, then it will be his last as a Bill. Edited September 26, 2016 by TPS

Williams is a pro bowler and he is a better fit in a one-gap scheme without a doubt! Ryan ran his two-gap scheme the majority of the time last year and it was the biggest reason for the drop off in sacks, no question! Not to mention both Mario and Dareus complaining about how they were being utilized in Ryan's scheme since around training camp. Probably ran that two-gap more than he should have because he didn't want to look like Pettine with being #2 in sacks but 25th against the run. Ryan mixed it up far too much last year with so many looks, fronts and not much really worked. It was easy to see which games he ran that one-gap more often and it was in the second game against the Patriots and the last game against the Jets among others. This game he started out using a two-gap and stuffed the run, got the lead and was able to use his one-gap 3-4 for which he was so well known for and it worked so well because the Bills had the lead. When the Bills run game works and the team gets the lead it helps the Bills defense work too.

I agreed that coaching was the primary reason for the drop off in sacks. Let's not conflate points here. It's also worh noting that they mixed things up from the get go; the very first 3rd down of the game was a 5-man pressure package. The point I've always made is that Kyle isn't a poor fit for Rex's D; he's a poor fit for certain roles in Rex's D. As the 3T (or simply the "T" in Rex's playbook), he's an ideal fit.
DrDawkinstein Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 There were at least 2 plays where I saw him drop into coverage. Both of those plays were very successful for our Defense. Confusion upfront got them some quick and heavy pressure on Palmer. Wonder when Kyle is going to start pouting about having to drop into coverage? Oh wait, he's a consummate professional and team player.
Blokestradamus Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 We know what Kyle has done in the past. The first two games this year, he was a bit sluggish. I wondered if age and injury was finally getting to him. It's good to see the old Kyle back. He was outstanding. Long may it continue.
DrDawkinstein Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Kyle Williams has been playing for the Bills for 10 years. Over that time, we've probably switched D schemes 10 times. Every time we switch there is a thread about how Kyle won't fit into the new defense. And every time, he goes out and puts up All-Pro level performances (as long as he is healthy). One of the best Bills of all time.
YoloinOhio Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 @salsports Kyle Williams was on the field for 64/82 snaps. Many of them he was the only DL. And he was maybe the best player on the field. Crazy.

Kyle Williams is a poor fit in a two-gap scheme as those players are usually bigger and stronger who need to wrestle the tackles to control the gaps rather than rush the passer through one gap. It was clear yesterday that Kyle is more of a fit in a one-gap scheme and utilized in that scheme he can return to his pro bowl form. So when the defense runs mostly a two-gap scheme all last year there was a real reason for the drop off from all those pro bowl pass rushers. I still don't get the half right thing.

Rex's scheme isn't a 2-gap scheme primarily; it's a heavy mix of multiple responsibilities up front. That's what I meant. And IMO, lack of length is the biggest issue for Kyle when he's asked to 2-gap.

It seems like the team is finally coming out of "preseason" after somewhat skipping the real preseason. Hopefully Dareus doesn't take until week 6 to start moving full speed all game...
