ChevyVanMiller Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 (edited) Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter in the history of the world. (Don't flame this into a debate, if you disagree start your own damn thread for your favorite). Many artists have covered Bob. Here are my Top 10 in descending order: 10) 9) Manfred Mann - Mighty Quinn 8) Johnny Winter- Highway 61 Revisited 7) Eddie Vedder - Masters of War 6) Eric Clapton - Don't Think Twice It's Alright 5) Jeff Buckley - Mama You've Been On My Mind 4) Them - It's All Over Now Baby Blue http://youtube.com/watch?v=zWxhoeERMZU 3) Adele - Make You Feel My Love 2) Guns and Roses - Knockin' On Heaven!s Door 1) Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower And a bonus... The Band - I Shall Be Released http://youtube.com/watch?v=_-XwB8exoTE Edited September 20, 2016 by ChevyVanMiller
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 I would put Van Morrison doing "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" as number 1. Then there is this:
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Call me sappy... But Rod Stewart's cover isn't bad: I will probably hear about it...
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Throw in a little Weird Al for good measure:
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Oops: forgot my disclaimer. I totally agree with you Chevy. Your list is a great one. Just threw some more in there to add to your list. Maybe the ones not on your list be #11-30 somewhere... ;-) Again, great list!

Not sure why only the first video linked properly, so I added the artist and title of each. Watch them while you can, Bob is notorious for having all copyrighted material removed from YouTube. The Poojer Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Good list, i also greatly appreciate EiL for including Weird Al. Never heard the Jim James Calexico version, but both of them can do no wrong in my book
4merper4mer Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) Weird marketing gimmick for a car company if you ask me. Did they sign Dylan to endorse? Like Eminem's Detroit commercials? I can't wait until Ford picks the top Sitcoms of all time. Edited September 20, 2016 by 4merper4mer

Doc Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Good call with the GN'R version of "KoHD" but wrong live performance: And this cover deserves mentioning:
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 This really aint bad either... I know Clapton had the "Popluar" version in 1970s... But mixed w/Bob Marley, GnR, and Clapton... It is pure dynamite! ENJOYING the best of four worlds: 1. Songsmithing: Dylan 2. Guitarwork: EC 3. LeadVocalwork/Version: Marley, (I can't find Bob Marley's version anywhere... I know he did it.) 4. Hard/Modern twist: GnR (Doc's post above) ...& the background (didn't source it, any comments, gr8ly appreciated) behind the song and why it does fit best, even know it peaked popular, by Eric Clapton: "This song is written from the perspective of a dying sheriff: "Mama, take this badge off of me/I can't use it anymore/It's gettin' dark, too dark for me to see/I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door." Dylan wrote it for the 1973 western film, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid. It plays while Sheriff Colin Baker is dying from his gunshot wounds. Dylan cameos in the movie as the character, Alias."
DC Tom Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter in the history of the world. Mozart disagrees. (Don't flame this into a debate, if you disagree start your own damn thread for your favorite). Mozart's dead, so he can't start his own damn thread.

The Band - I Shall Be Released http://youtube.com/watch?v=_-XwB8exoTE just a quick comment on Hendrix's version of all along the watchtower. That is Dave Mason front and center playing acoustic guitar on that tune. The magic in Hendrix's version is evident. I remember reading it even blew Dylan away. If you get the chance catch Dave Mason on tour. he does his take of Watchtower. And usually is good for a story about it.
