He can't credibly claim that MJ was part of his Crohn's disease treatment, so really, the compassion excuse is weak. This guy like to smoke weed--before he knew he had Crohn's

Why can't he?

He is supremely talented. If he can keep his disease in check and maintain his health, while getting better at the NFL game, he really could have a very solid / good career. Needs to build his strength and conditioning back to game day caliber first though. Best wishes! Also, on a side note it explains the marijuana frequency as to helping him eat and keep a strong appetite. No joke intended, there are certain medicinal benefits despite its preclusion from NFL life.

Why isn't that credible? Just because he liked to smoke before he was in the NFL doesn't mean it's not helpful now. A quick Google search turns up many articles (most of them not from high times) indicating there is evidence that Marijuana can be helpful for those suffering from Crohn's and Colitis.

And yet, he might not have known it was Crohn's / Colitis, but he certainly knew the effects marijuana had on him, in that it helped aid his appetite and in the process of digestion.

Those are quality of life scores reported. People feel better when they get high. It doesn't affect the natural course of the disease itself and is not mainstream therapy by any means.

It's a banned substance so it doesn't matter why he "took" that medicine.

Why can't he?

See above.

to be fair, it might also be that he likes to get high.

i agree that this is likely weed, and that its likely self medicating, and that the nfl should probably allow it medically if nothing else.....

but before we start going to far down the rabbit hole, A) we dont know what it was that he got hit for B) he needs to know better, as WEO points out HGH has great medical uses and is banned too, but without near as much outrage C) if marijuana this is his THIRD positive in a very short time in the nfl, plus his college issues - at some point he will need to make a choice to leave it behind or leave the league. his next positive test is 10 games.

I am not a pot enthusiast by any stretch but at this point it has not been established this suspension is for pot. It could be for steroids which were used to combat Crohn's. Try to give Henderson the same benefit of the doubt you'd give him if he were on the Pats. Edited by 4merper4mer

Testing for weed is stupid. You can buy it legally for medical use in 22 states! Its time for the NFL to get its act together and stop this insane policySome

Some NFL customers put great store in obeying the law in all 50 states. (read corporations with boxes, tv ads guys, etc etc) So, they HAVE to enforce the law of the land........you can have your opinion, but, the law is the law...wherever. The NFL, then, cannot say they now approve stoners in league.

Can you think of any differences?

Do you know that there is no cure for Crohns? So, what would treatment entail? Feeling better maybe?

Can you think of any differences?

certainly. and if i wanted to be a jerk about it.... one is a guy foregoing legal, and scrutinized treatment based on its potential misuse, and the other is self medicating with an (in some states) illegal substance that isnt proven to fix this issue.

or you could catch the bulk of my tone on this issue that i do think that the nfl should go ahead and change their policy, but in a discussion today, he has broken the rules, and likely had SEVERAL warnings before getting here... so id consider this an issue from both sides.

I'm not here to debate whether or not Marijuana should be omitted from the list of illegal drugs list from the NFL, just that if Seantrel was prescribed Marijuana for his illness, he should have disclosed it to the NFL.

Yes of course, and that is a common use of "medical marijuana."

How do you know he didn't?

What is the fact pattern here?

id be on board with him screaming from the roof tops that the nfl should change the policy..... but just continuing to test positive and not doing anything about it just isnt a real solution here, and he bears responsibility in that (assuming its the issue)

I don't agree with the rule, but it is what it is. A four game suspension means this is at least his third failed test. That's why the Crohn's disease defense is not credible. He's been in the drug program since the first failed test and knows the deal with what he can and can't do.

from an article citing in the other thread:

“The results are interesting, but they are based on tiny numbers," said David E. Bernstein, MD, chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at North Shore University Hospital-LIJ Medical Center in Great Neck, N.Y. "It would be dangerous to assume anything, or change anything, about cannabis for Crohn’s at this point."

The study's use of CDAI scores as a basis for benefits also concerns some. CDAI is a disease activity scoring system based on patients' recordings in diaries they keep on disease responses. CDAI was developed in the 1970s, and some experts question how reliable a tool it is today.

“CDAI does take into account a patient’s general well-being, so euphoria from the cannabis would affect it," Naftali said. "There are two possibilities: The anti-inflammatory effect of cannabinoids worked to ameliorate the disease, or the inflammation was the same but patients were in euphoria and felt better. However, some things hint towards a true anti-inflammatory effect. For example, the number of bowel movements was reduced."

In addition to there being no hard evidence of reduced inflammation, she noted that most patients relapsed within two weeks of stopping the marijuana.

Could be but everyone is talking about MJ. Anti-inflammation steroids are not banned, as far as I can see.

Seriously?

if he did, and they said no go, its still very much on him as a guy with 2 previous positive tests and great familiarity with the system.

but as another said, its possible its some sort of other PED that would help with recovery and be a 4 game issue on the first offense -- even if he didnt know it was banned. thats a situation id feel worse for the guy in (though he still needs to be disclosing)

Seriously?

A doctor's opinion is not exactly dicta when you have a statute stating X.

Anyway, enough of this. I'm wasting my time.

"OT Seantrel Henderson tested positive for marijuana, source said, which can be used to help deal with pain for his Crohn's disease."

I was wondering if the NFL was going to have to alter it's zero tolerance for weed with it being prescribed by doctors now.
