Nice ROI on #8 overall pick from 2 years ago

Woof. This is who they took instead of Sammy Watkins.

@rapsheet

The #Browns traded former first-round CB Justin Gilbert to the #Steelers for a 6th rounder in 2018, source said.

GO BILLS!!!

They are sneaky clever....

Had an 8 hour drive home today and all the sports channels were talking about this, but no one said it was only a 6th rounder in return. They just kept saying how stupid the Browns are, but would never say the other side of the deal. Now I get it....

I said it with the Mingo trade. I love trading low draft pick for ex 1st rounders. May never turn into anything but it's worth a 6th rounder to kick the tires on.

In general I don't have a problem with a team throwing a late round pick at the Browns for a low chance/high return 1st round bust, but they are taking on guaranteed contracts. In these specific cases Mingo at least has a chance to be a productive pass rush specialist, but Gilbert has no hope of being productive in the NFL - and he's got two guaranteed years left on his deal.

Per Sportrac, Gilbert has two years left on his contract with a manageble base salary both seasons and a roster bonus of $1.2M due in 2017:

So it's not costing the Steelers much in cap space this season to try him out. If he works out they'll sign him to an extension. If he doesn't they'll cut him before the roster bonus is due

yep they couldn't wait to get rid of him and now can play him twice a year. If the Steelers actually play him. The Browns pulled the old healthy scratch a few times.

That link states that his entire contract is fully guaranteed, including that roster bonus.

Spanos doesn't like that.

Bosa is OK with it.

I know that wasn't the exact and only issue, but if you don't trust your draft, it can be an issue.

Draft well? Never matters....

Bet it comes with offset and he won't likely be out of the league completely inside a year

There's nothing official out there about offsets except that they were a sticking point during contract negotiations. He was the second last player of that draft to sign. I wouldn't be surprised if there were offsets, but some team would have to sign him. If you've seen him play, you wouldn't assume that was a given. He's horrific.
