Yes, we are doing that with Cardale already in his second showing i noticed...

True, but analyzing him is different than EJ. We don't know what Cardale is capable of yet. We know what we have with EJ.

I'll prepare to dodge the bullets and arrows, but do we? If you look back, EJ was considered a raw prospect as well. I'm no QB guru, but I see a different player right now than what I saw even last year. With some guys it takes longer -- and perhaps the coaches EJ has worked with the past two offseasons have helped him develop.

I fully understand this is likely EJ's last season in a Bills' uniform -- but a part of me holds out hope he will consider returning with a modest contract to be the backup, if nobody is bidding for his services as a starter.

agreed, i just noticed the wishy washy notes after his "down" game last night.

Over analyze is our forte my friend : )

If no one is bidding for his services, wouldn't that be telling?

As a starter. The question is whether EJ will choose to go somewhere on the "promise" he will compete for the job, or whether he'll want to stay in the Bills organization.

Truthfully,I guess a better statement would be we have a good idea of what EJ is capable of.

I agree EJ does appear to be different this year but still shows his bad habits. I didn't get to see him play yesterday and he's the only QB that they didn't do a video for every throw that he attempted so I can't review it. I have stated in the TC threads before that I feel like he does look more confident and comfortable than he did at any point last year.

yea I know. I don't think he played a bad game but made some bad decisions is all. I'm sure he knows he's not going to be starting so could just have easily thought, screw it, it's preseason anyways.

I think there are a few teams that he would have a chance at competing for the start.

Like Nassib perhaps ?

EJ made some nice plays for sure. He threw a couple low and looked sketchy. But later on he went through all his progressions to find a reception

Not an EJ fan but glad we took him instead of Nassib.

We had quite a dustup about that when Marrone came on board around here.

Even marrone wouldn't take him.

good times

But yes. EJM was the best pick at that point in time

GB- good take bud. Agreed on all points. McCoy didn't' look so hot running, but great receiving. Nice to see Clay make a big catch, and TT really looked to improve from last year.

Then again, today a number of announcers did not credit the Bills so much for their performance, but ripped to shreds how bad the Giants looked. We'll see.next week should be telling against the Skins. The last game is useless. Will never watch more than the 1st Quarter of the last game as everyone playing after that will not be on the team.

On kickoffs: with touchbacks coming out to the 25, the relative value of a guy who gets (like Gay) 67 % touchbacks vs. a guy like Carpenter (perhaps 50%?) seems diminished. In fact, you can make a good case that you're better off enticing the other team to attempt a return on a ball kicked 3-4 yards deep into the end zone - sure, you risk a long return, but the receiving team also risks: (1) getting tackled inside the 25; (2) fumbling it away; (3) having a decent return called back on a penalty. In other words, using a roster spot on a kickoff specialist was already questionable under pre-2016 rules; now, the calculus has decidedly tilted against it. So Gay was given a shot to show he's not just a kickoff specialist, and he failed in epic fashion.

I am honestly amazed Gay has not been cut yet. I thought he would have been gone by the time I woke up this morning.

So who is going to be Dareus substitute and how did he look yesterday?

Bryant I believe. If you didn't hear about him, either here or elsewhere, he did good enough.

I thought he played well and seems to have a better command of the offense, but in the execution of plays he looked like the same EJ to me. Some really, really good mixed in with 2 or 3 total head scratchers. Still, he is a middle of the pack backup QB. I do believe Rex and Roman when they say they are comfortable with him as the #2.

That is the essence of EJ.

At his best, he just let's it rip. Sometimes it's a great play and sometimes a crazy throw into double coverage. At his worst, he is super tentative and doesn't pull the trigger at all.

But he is never consistently good.

I like Corbin Bryant I think he can legit play. He isn't Dareus (nobody is) but he is someone who would start for plenty of teams. If we lose another starter up front then I'd be a bit more concerned.

The NFL really screwed the pooch with moving touchbacks to the 25 didn't they? I'm not a very smart person, but my first thought after it was announced was "watch out for higher kicks that drop in just short of the goal line."

OK, maybe it wasn't my first thought, but, it was an early thought. So much for removing collisions from the game as was the NFL's intent.

Basically, what the NFL wants is no kick returns. They either want you to start from the 25 or make an onside kick. Except they don't want you to have to declare that you are going to use an onside kick the way you have to declare your 2 point conversion attempt now. Problem is, they don't know how to make this happen.

Eventually, they will just eliminate kickoffs and make teams declare their intentions. Maybe 2 more seasons until this happens.
