Nanker Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 One of the better ones....will miss him Yes. Wow. I didn't know he was ill. RIP Mr. Saunders.
DCbillsfan Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 This sucks. He was a local TV sports guy in Baltimore for years prior to ESPN. He was a good all around guy. RIP
KD in CA Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 That sucks. Smart, funny, honest, direct. He's been the best thing in sports media since Dick Schaap died. RIP
VirginiaMike Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 So sorry he hear this. I did not know he was illl. One of the best and classiest people discussing sports on TV.
26CornerBlitz Posted August 10, 2016 Author Posted August 10, 2016 So sorry he hear this. I did not know he was illl. One of the best and classiest people discussing sports on TV. He was one of the very few real journalists on ESPN that I liked and respected.
KOKBILLS Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Wow...That's terrible...He will be missed...Most definitely one of the best...
Marv's Neighbor Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I had no idea he was 61. That's way too young. RIP, and prayers to his family.
BigdaddyinOrlando Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 One of the few on that network, very few, that was a joy to listen to! RIP and prayers to his friends and family.
DasNootz Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Didn't ESPN just announce that he was no longer going to a broadcaster for them? When I read "Died unexpectedly at home" and "no suspicion of foul play", my initial thought is that it is a suicide. Couple that with his history of depression, and I think it's a logical conclusion. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I guess it really doesn't matter at this point.
Talley56 Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 RIP, such a shame to see him go. Tough to see Hannah Storm announce his death through tears just like she had to do for Stuart Scott.
K D Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I can't believe this. Did they say how he died? Seems completely unexpected. I don't know him personally but he seemed like a classy guy and I've only heard good things from people posting about it today. Sad day
stinky finger Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Have to be honest. Can't think of another ESPNer that I liked more. sad indeed
May Day 10 Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Yeah, this one is tough. He has been the best on that network for years. Such a great calming voice i can project in my mind on call. Always level headed and professional. Would let the athletes be the center if attention. He didnt need a schtick or catch phrases. Just a great broadcaster and that carried him. Big friend of hockey as well
4merper4mer Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Like everyone else in the thread, I really liked him. RIP
shrader Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I would have guessed he was much older. It seems like he was there forever.
YoloinOhio Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I've always liked that Sports Reporters show on Sunday mornings. RIP! I can't believe this. Did they say how he died? Seems completely unexpected. I don't know him personally but he seemed like a classy guy and I've only heard good things from people posting about it today. Sad day He was not known to be battling any potentially terminal illness, such as cancer, but Saunders had publicly discussed his battles with depression. http://heavy.com/sports/2016/08/john-saunders-cause-of-death-how-did-the-sports-journalist-die/
MattM Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 RIP--like most others here, I, too really liked his work, The stories about his battling depression are incredibly sad and troubling. Here's hoping he's at peace....
