3rdand12 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Actually no it wasn't. They didn't play well together at all. Having Harvin as a threat was a lot of leverage against defenses. Admittedly Bills offense is still a work in progress
eball Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Can't think of a better addition to the board this year than TurnerE. Thanks man.
34-78-83 Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I think Woods will fill the void we are worrying about at #2. Playing with a torn groin in 2 places massively affected his burst and quickness in routes.
White Linen Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Well, they frequented opposite sides of the field, so it gets a little tricky to play well "together". The deep safeties watching Sammy sure didn't play so well together on this 51 yard Percy bomb By "frequent" do you mean the 3 games they were both on the field?
White Linen Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Having Harvin as a threat was a lot of leverage against defenses. Admittedly Bills offense is still a work in progress Harvin wasn't used as leverage when he played with Watkins (3 games) - it was Watkins who either wasn't playing well or allowed Harvin to get open. That's not good.

Bleeding Bills Blue Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Ugh - i remember this game as the game where rex went full on coverages/contain. Alex smith had eons to throw and we couldn't stop their 3rd string running back. That'd probably be why we lost. TT had a good half - then we went full madden (the game not the coach) and stopped running in the 2nd half. Did we have a goalline fumble or something in there? I get my terrible chiefs losses mixed up sometimes.
White Linen Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Maybe i am misunderstanding. The beginning of the season Bills had two viable threats that needed defending at WR ? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you too. I was just pointing out that Harvin and Watkins played in 3 games together and it wasn't successful except for the NE game. So they had one good game together in a loss. Harvin started out decent the first 3 games of the season but Sammy had 2 terribly ineffective games - remember everyone calling him out and saying Harvin is playing like our number one? While Harvin started out ok and Sammy very badly and that was their only time together - I remember it being a mess instead of wow it was great having 2 threats.

I cannot argue what occurred on the field for the Bills. I sure do not suggest success early with Harvin I guess my point about leverage , is that Defenses needed to scheme for the game coming in . If the Bills had executed, or were more evolved whilst we had a semi healthy Harvin, i am of the opinion, conceptually they could have been closer to amazing than what they showed. it was a theoretical thought about what Bills and Roman could be doing with Tyrod and another scoring threat. You may say that Defenses were looking at Percy more than Harvin at that point ? When Harvin was gone they looked at Watkins and never looked back. get me another "Harvin" and let TT use both eyes to make his (read) and throw. as an aside. Recall how Watkins was used in colegge ha Get another guy who Must be covered with some help and now Sam can get some in space lol Edited July 20, 2016 by 3rdand12

Sammy is talented enough to get his as he showed in the last 3/4 of the season. Obviously our cap didn't lend us to address what you'd like in a #2 and FA WR's are ridiculously priced anyway. What needs to happen now - since we likely don't have a play making #2 is that they take advantage of the 1 on 1 matchups with reading defenses properly, running a great route, and catching that ball. If that happens things will open up for Sammy. I think the most likely person to do that is Clay. He's got the talent to command attention and make the defense have to adjust where the safeties play.

WE do agree~ That is why they brought him on. Nagging dings hindered him last year. Don't sleep on this Annen kid either. As you rightly mention it is on Tyrod , to keep the defenses honest on the coverages. See the advantage and then execute. Lets keep our fingers crossed

Two thoughts on Clay: - The Cover 1/3 looks the Bills have been getting take away the seam route, which I'd like to see him have a chance to run more often. He would also be helped a great deal by another deep threat opposite Watkins so that they'd see more Cover 2, which would match him up with a MLB/ILB in base defenses or 3rd safety in nickel/dime. - The play at RT is important for Clay. If he's regularly needed to block or chip to give help it will hinder his opportunities. Solid play at RT will enable him to flex more often and get into his routes quicker and more often.
Bleeding Bills Blue Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Roman wasn't using Watkins as a decoy. The KC defense took Watkins away by doubling him. There's nothing Roman could do about it except take what that extra attention to Watkins opened up for the rest of the offense. Roman did his job. So did Sammy, but the other players on the field didn't execute well enough. Expect to see teams use a lot of Cover 1/3, often rolled toward Watkins, this season. This is why some of us have been harping on the team finding another quality WR, someone to make teams have to pick their poison. Or hopefully TT can recognize this early on - and stop sending Sammy Deep. Easiest way to beat those double teams is to not decoy/send him deep. Get him the ball before help can get there.

The concept is right in making the opposing defense respect our offensive playmakers on both sides. So by "Harvin", if you imagine a WR that could get on the field and run and make plays ...

I would like to second this !
White Linen Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 The concept is right in making the opposing defense respect our offensive playmakers on both sides. So by "Harvin", if you imagine a WR that could get on the field and run and make plays ... I can certainly understand what your saying but even though it was a short sample (3 games) that didn't work - although mildly in the NE game. That's why I think a great route running possession receiver on the other side is really what I like best. I'm hoping Woods plays well because I think that role suites him nicely. As we all know - there's several ways to get your star WR free'd up, so this is just one way. Tyrod's running threat, a pass catching RB, your slot receiver and TE can all be used in different ways. Sammy should have a great year so long as that foot heals.
