With the influx of incoming tight ends from collegiate spread offenses, Y-ISO has become increasingly en vogue over the last five years. The formation consists of three wide receivers on one side of the formation and a tight end on the other side, whether hes a yard away from the offensive tackle with his hand in the dirt or split out to the sideline. The isolation creates numerous coverage mismatches across the field and it can help quarterbacks identify coverage during pre-snap

The teams that truly thrive in the Y-ISO and use it consistently not only pass out of the set but run effectively as well. Anytime you have a formation that youre not doing multiple things out of, you know, its not going to take very long for defensive coordinators to figure it out, Smith says. The reason that were able to live in that formation is that we run the ball so well out of it.

I've never understood why Buffalo has invested so little in the TE position as other teams used athletic types to exploit defenses. Now, they've signed (and since re-negotiated) Charles Clay to be that player for them.

There aren't a lot of great cover LB's, but there are plenty of TE's who can run the seam and make difficult catches.

Buffalo will be forced to throw the ball this year and Clay had better factor into that. I'm not convinced opposing DC's are concerned with any WR beyond Watkins. Roman had better think of creative ways to get the ball downfield because the run isn't always going to be easy.

Seems like it's always been easy for Roman. He's never had worse than the 8th rushing offense.

Tyrod's development should allow it to be a more well-rounded offense.
