Ed Reed saw "confusion" and "guys not giving effort" when watching 2015 #Bills http://trib.al/XvCHZ7G

Orchard Park, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have done everything they can to transform their disappointing 2015 defense into a unit that can live up to Rex Ryan's bold words.

Part of the transformation happened with the coaching staff. Rex Ryan brought in his brother Rob and his old star safety Ed Reed to get some fresh eyes on what was a mediocre defensive unit in 2015.

When Reed went and watched film of the 2015 Bills, the lack of communication astounded him.

Not surprised since the yoke and muzzle of uncooperative lockerroom "leadership" has been removed. What Ed Reed saw in those films was readily apparent, unfortunately.

All this talk we've been hearing about how communication is so important to this defense - I assume they will have hand signals etc but if it is in fact so critical now - wonder if crowd noise when the defense is on the field could actually not necessarily be a good thing now?

Also don't understand what the coaches were doing last year when guys were not communicating or trying - how seriously were they addressing those issues. If they were aware and focused on it they weren't very effective

Are we sure it's gone? Because we never saw this uncooperative leadership when we were 10th in defense and 4th in 2014. Suddenly, the defense got uncooperative when we got a new defensive coach.

If this defense isn't good next year, who are we going to blame since Mario? How about not complicating the defense so much so football players can just play and not think? "Mario, Kyle, Jerry, Marcell. Go destroy the oline and make plays in the backfield."

Mario had his hand but if plays were coming in too late, it's potentially hard to process and communicate

Likewise, the same issues were said about robs coaching here.

It was all Sean PAyton's fault. Just like last year was all Mario's fault. Teflon Ryan Bros

I suspect this was a real issue......late communications from the coaches

Yes to this. Is Rex a coach or player?

Yes. And like I said, it was painfully obvious.

If the defense isn't any good next year, I will scrutinize effort and coaching. Same as last year, when I found both to be lacking. Although I give some credit to Ryan for making changes after the bye. Dareus responded well to those changes. Mario still didn't give a crap.

I found Reed's comments about the practice atmosphere last year very telling in that regard. That's on Ryan every bit as much as it is on the players. You gotta demand it in practice before you demand it in games. Personally and from what I've heard, I think Mario cast very long shadow, especially when it came to younger players. It's been said that KW was the only one that could tell MW where to step off, but I've heard that isn't necessarily the case.

Fair. I just don't think many players responded well to the defense. It's funny how Hughes escapes criticize when his sacks went way done and he took some of dumbest penalties I have ever seen.

They interviewed him on Baltimore FAN radio here a few weeks ago. Ed sounded like a major pothead on the air as always. They were giving him good-natured hell for going to Buffalo, and Ed's like "Whatever." He didn't elaborate too much at all about the new gig, other than to say everyone's looking good.

I do think he's a great addition though, this team needs more people like him who know what it takes to win in this league.

It is pretty obvious that the coaches dismissed while they may be good position coaches were poor in communicating what needed to be done by defense players in scheme. This is why I think Rob Ryan and Ed Reed were brought in.

This I think is on Rex even though I do not think others are; his teams often seem to have discipline issues and I think partly it is because he is a "Players' coach". It is hard to be best friend and dad with a paddle.

Probably because he still contributed on the defense...? He led the team in hurries, played pass coverage when asked, and had like 30 something more tackles.

Same amount of sacks as Mario, who apparently wasn't trying. Some of Hughes' 15 yard penalties were killers that keep drives alive.

I've always wondered about this. Players often say they practice hard with Rex but still have fun.

Even if Rex is a "Player's Coach," what about the coordinators and positions coaches? If they're disciplinarians, it doesn't matter much if Rex is a little lax.

His record with regard to penalties while coaching the Jest doesn't reflect this.

Hughes gets roasted for his lack of discipline. He escapes further criticism because he plays like his hair is on fire to the whistle.

If you cite the reduction is sack numbers as indicative of poor play, so be it. But I think it shows a lack of appreciation for playing a different position than he did under Schwartz. It's fair to fault Rex for that if you like, but Hughes at least tried to adapt and didn't lack for effort.

I think it is fair to say that Hughes takes some very bad penalties

but

He does do it because he plays with emotion the guy is 100 percent every play. I think Jerry gets frustrated and then it starts happening......Aaron Williams is the same way.

They care....I want players on the field that care
