Usually players do this when they are told they need to pay back bonus money so they "unretire" when team has signed replacement or does not have cap space for player. Fans will still defend them against the "greedy" owners. See: Orton, Kyle.

True. Often times the team will let it slide, but Lynch has $5M in signing bonus left.

Was it Lynch that hasn't spent a dollar of his contract and has saved it all? Or am I thinking of another player?

I saw him minutes after his retirement was announced by the Seahawks. He stormed out of the event we we were at. No one in his entourage was smiling.

 

I couldn't help but wonder if there was a causal relationship between the announcement and his apparent mood. It might have been coincidence.

honestly, its a really tough spot for a team here. there should probably be some better option (require retirement papers within a given window and cant unretire in the same year, for instance)
