Those of you that follow my writing know that I like to stick to breakdowns and X's and O's types of posts. But this little episode with people getting worked up because Stephon Gilmore didn't show up to a voluntary mini-camp and the Bills leaked it while contract talks are going on is disgraceful. I've been working on this piece for a few days now, but when the news broke i decided to change the angle of it to address some things that I think matter for every franchise, but even more for one that's operated (financially) in the way that the Bills have.to

It's not about spending money, it's spending the right money. Premier players at premier positions that aren't older than 26 when signing the deal. Glenn, Dareus, Gilmore fit all of these categories, and get bonus points for being drafted by the team. If the Bills had any sort of reputation, they'd likely take a small percentage less to stay in BUF than move, but we know how this team has been viewed.

What's their reputation been for the last few years? You've got a rogue GM that cant get along with a head coach, You've got a defensive mutiny against one of the greatest defensive coaches of the last 20 years. You draft a guy at 19 overall qith questions about an injured shoulder. Your GM does his cocky smirk and says "nah, he's cleared idk where you got that." Proceeds to "aggravate it" while pushing a tackle dummy, requiring surgery thatll keep him out for at least 6 weeks. 2 Hours later Sammy Watkins breaks his foot.

Have a positive news release that should've came out last year tbh and #PayGillyAllTheMillys.

Anyway, it's a bit of a long read but hope you enjoy it or take something from it that we can chat about in the comments.

if the two teams are close to getting a deal done as it was stated why would he show up, risk injury, and then have the deal pulled? Someone had a deal last year before blowing up their hand and now he stuck with one year deals without a lot of guaranteed cash.

It's just smart on his part.

I don't sense any hostility what so ever on either side.

my thoughts exactly. Plus he's still rehabbing a shoulder.

Good point Rquinn. But the fans belief of the Bills' reputation is different than the players viewpoint. From their viewpoint, the last few guys were paid well and all taken care of. Hughes actually took a hometown discount, he could have got more on the open market. Dareus and Glenn were taken care of. Gilmore is probably only looking at that, not the old regime, or even the recent perceived bumbling of the new one. Most of these players like Buffalo and their teammates.

Oh I wasn't speaking to the reputation of not being cheap, I mentioned that difference in the post with Pegula having the cash on hand for signing bonuses as a benefit. So the guys that are in house and see them getting taken care of know what's up. I wouldn't say the rest of the league is ready to come to Buffalo, though. At least yet :)

I would count McCoy and Clay as other teams guys who were paid handsomely. They didn't have to with McCoy but did, before he played a down. They went out and outbid Miami, and overpaid (although I think it was wise) for Clay.

Go back and take a look at the defensive rankings of those teams in the last 6 years.....

his last 2 were terrible but to his credit he wasn't really working with much outside of that DL

I'm pretty sure they extended him because he wasn't going to come unless he got a new deal.

Well, if true, that goes to the point about players around the league knowing you can now go to Buffalo and get paid. ;)

In contrast to the bulk of this franchise's existence, Doug Whaley tells us that this team is now committed to acquiring good players and paying them enough $$$ to keep them.

I believe him, and he has backed up that philosophy with recent action.

I think the Gilmore situation will take care of itself given the passage of time.

Hang in there!

Cracked the top 20 in points allowed once in 5 years. Cracked the top 18 zero times. That, my friend, is a defense that has been figured out by offenses everywhere.

Even if there were hostility, I'm not sure it matters. It's been said before by both front offices and players. The NFL is a business. If you treat it like it's not, it can come back to bite you in the ass. They tagged him and he didn't complain. He's working on a deal and neither side is complaining. Why on earth would anyone risk injury in a situation like he's in, to attend VOLUNTARY camp? He's got nothing to prove to anyone and will be the day 1 starter barring an injury. That's just a simple fact.

You've said this in 43,432 other threads. What about Gilmore aka (the topic) ?

If Janoris Jenkins who sucks got paid then Gilmore pretty much has an open checkbook. Pay him now.

Someone who understands the business, right here! :worthy:

Yep, I remember the feeling of sweating out the Stevie Johnson deal (and it got done), the Jerry Hughes deal (and it got done), the Marcel Dareus deal (and it got done), and the Cordy Glenn deal (and it got done).

Doug will Git'r'dun!

OMG

Yes lets cherry pick those stats

I'm pretty sure they extended him because he wasn't going to come unless he got a new deal.

Rquinn,

Thanks for providing that.....

Last year was a down year.....2013 was the year that got RR fired....but previous to that there is 4 years of good D stats.

RR DOES know how to coach a defense......just like the years where he took teams deep into the playoffs they are not recent.
