What about the cap?

Bills are now well under the cap after Glenn's extension freed up almost 8mil, and I'm pretty sure someone upthread said that Freeney played for a pretty low contract last year.

In 11 games he had 9 tackles and 8 sacks. He's a third down edge pass rusher at this point.

From my perspective of things - that is not what Shaq lawson is. Rex wants him to line up across the formation, and rush as well as occasionally drop in coverage. His responsibilities will also include run defense, which freeney doesn't do at this point.

He might be helpful in a rotation, but he probably isn't seeing the field more than 20 plays a game. If he plays again - it will probably be for Arizona.

So for those who clicked on this thread to discover the "4 reasons The Bills should try and sign Dwight Freeney" and were disappointed that they weren't listed... here they are:

  • Immediate Production
  • Affordable Cost
  • Veteran Leadership
  • Depth
  • Dwight Freeney played Kallage Football at Syracuse University
So there ya have it, in a nutshell. "The 4 reasons The Bills should try and sign Dwight Freeney".

B-)

dude its a click bait article. Who really is concerned with what it says?

Just because Lawson makes it back doesn't mean we can't rotate the two. Freeney has forgotten more about football than Lawson knows at this point. We don't know how NFL ready Lawson will be mid-season, what kind of shape, and what impact he can make as a rookie.

It's pretty obvious at this point but especially with Shaq missing time the Bills defense could use another pass-rusher. Former Syracuse Orange standout Dwight Freeney is still available and would be a good fit IMO. What does everyone think about GMDW making a move like this?

What makes Freeney a good fit? Rex likes guys that can play multiple positions and have multiple responsibilities. The last thing he looks for is a player that can only play one position or do one thing. I don't disagree that he could be an asset in pass rushing downs but his versatility is lacking for this scheme (like it or not, I know many don't)

Can he still produce at his age? I'd be open to a one year deal if he can.

He had 8.0 sacks with the Cardinals last year.

Rex made guys like Quinton Coples, Jason Babin and Calvin Pace OLBs with the Jets.

If Dwight Freeney--the pass rush specialist--is being thought of as a stop gap until Shaq gets healthy, then it's a perfect time to discuss since--from what I gather--Shaq will be doing nothing at all like what Freeney does/has.

Some things never change on TBD I havent missed much. Glad the tom foolery is still running amuck.

He also played those guys at 3-4 positions. It wasn't uncommon to see Pace at MLB or DT in passing downs. Same with Coples. Can't comment on Babin, but outside of the fact that all 3 players you mention had run stopping ability and 3 down ability. Probably least of which with Babin, but non of them are even remotely comparable to a one trick pony edge rusher. Again, I think we benefit. But Rex doesn't want any one trick pony's.

Freeney is nowhere near the perfect fit, they need a Calvin Pace type player which Manny Lawson can do. That position is not go get the qb -Freeney is not a fit.

Why is he still available ?

They need another body is what they need.

Get him on a one year deal with the promise that Rex will put him in a position to nab 1 more 3 year contract after (with or without the Bills being the paying party).

This, and that was something he was doing later in the season. Moving around, playing multiple positions. Did a pretty good job in that role actually.

Freeny could do whatever we need b/c we don't really need a permanent fixture. The concern is whether our pass rush will be what it needs to be the first half of the season (and to some extent all next season). He can still help with that.

Is now a good time to discuss what Shaq's role in Rex's defense will be?

I get the sense that the presumption of him being a pass-rush specialist is setting up a lot of Bills fans for disappointment/misappropriated critique.

Shaq's role is to be a three down hybrid OLB/DE. Manny can't do that nor can Freeney. But the two together might be nice. Manny plays OLB in the base 3-4 and Freeney plays DE in the nickel and dime packages.

It is never that simple but what other options do they have for DE in any four DL set?
