40 most hated NFL players of all time: loudmouths, cheaters and criminals

Who is the most hated NFL player of all time? That has become an intense and increasingly difficult question to answer in today’s climate, because it’s impossible to weigh the reasons not to like a player. Sporting News set out to name the top 40, however, and made one significant caveat to the list.

Aaron Hernandez, Rae Carruth, O.J. Simpson and Ray Rice were left off. Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder, and Carruth was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. Simpson’s transgressions came well after his playing career was over, and the Rice incident effectively ended his career. There’s no sense in debating those players’ place on this list.

Bill Bender: The Top-40 Most Hated NFL Players (12:50)

Tom Brady? Terrell Owens? Bryan Cox? Sporting News writer Bill Bender joined The John Murphy Show to discuss his recent post where he identifies the '40-Most Hated NFL Players of All Time.'

BIll Romanowski is definitely a guy that came to my mind first.

Him and Conrad Dobler comes too mind. Hated him even as a Bill when he was basicallly done.

@RyanTalbotBills

#Bills fans love Richie Incognito, but Buffalo's LG found himself on the 40 most hated players in NFL history list

A cerain Bills D- lineman once called him the dirtiest player in the league.

Hate slide by slide lists - there is nothing copy protected by lists as proven by multiple court cases.

Eli Manning? He was at the helm of a team that ruined the perfect season for the Cheaters. That instantly makes him a hero.

Chad Johnson? Yes, the OchoCinco stuff was silly and he was a clown, but I don't see how he is hated.

Brett Favre, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton? Seriously? These guys are hated?

Richie Incognito? Absurd.

Jay Cutler? Why?

Rodney Harrison should be in the top 15, he is ranked way too low.

How is Vince Wilfork not on this list? No Warren Sapp? No Andre Waters?

How in Bryan Cox only at 29 and why is Eli Manning on that list?

I also nominate Mercury Morris for being the jerk who gloats every time an undefeated team gets their first loss.

Probably because he and his royal football family forced a trade from Sand Diego to the NYG.

So John Elway too (except for the royal football family)?

They excluded murderers (and Ray Rice for some reason). Greg Hardy is a way worse person than Ray Rice.

And Tim Tebow is a way worse person than Rodney Harrison.

Yeah it's an odd list. Their exclusions are weird too. Vick didn't get excluded but Rice did. I get the murderers being excluded but I'm just not sure where the line is?

The haters hate the Tebow hype, which started in college with “The Speech.” Tebow’s strong beliefs in God have also drawn out both sides. He has done nothing wrong, but perhaps no quarterback with nine career wins as a starter (including playoffs) has driven so many headlines with so much criticism behind it.

what was the methodology? Was this created by a couple sports writers to sell ancestry.com subscriptions?

And I can tell you why OJ isn't on the list. Editor said "we are not exposing ourselves to that debate."
