Minority employees, women paid less at New York Times

Recommended Posts

A bombshell new survey claims the New York Times is paying its minority employees 10 percent less than company average while women earn 7 percent less than what men are paid.

The survey, conducted by the NewsGuild of New York, the union that represents about 1,100 employees at the Gray Lady, found that minorities are vastly overrepresented in the lowest paid jobs at the NYT.

The highest-paid jobs are dominated by men, the survey found. In addition, women and people of color are more likely to hold low-paying jobs and are much less prevalent in high-paying positions, the report, based on October pay data, revealed.

How many got their jobs because of affirmative action? Maybe they shouldn't have been hired in the first place? Since hiring isn't based on merit anymore.

Remember when the biggest criticism of Bush years was that the administration ignored science to push pet projects and it would be refreshing for an administration to embrace science and enact laws based on scientific fact?

Yeah, that was great.

We're still waiting

Anyone who's ever had a job, knew this to be the case in explaining male/female wage disparity.

Prof. Goldin found in a 2010 paper that men and women earned almost the same salaries right after receiving University of Chicago M.B.A.s. At least a decade after graduating, the women earned 57% of their male classmates.

The main factor, she and her co-authors concluded: Women became mothers, interrupted their careers and eschewed lengthy hours that generated higher paychecks. “These particular occupations,” Prof. Goldin says, “are not very forgiving of taking time off and having kids.”

In elite tiers of business, employees aren’t seen as interchangeable and therefore earn premiums for working longer hours. “You work more hours, you work crazy hours, and you get not crazy-amount more—you get crazy-amount-squared more,” Prof. Goldin said in one lecture on the topic.

Most people understand that some occupations are not very forgiving of taking off time to have kids, but now we have to factor in the women who think they deserve that same time off from work without having kids, and calling it "Me-ternity leave."

Is it a sign of the times that I don't know if you're kidding?
