Hockey Talks go Bad Today

Just another situation where E$PN radio and E$PN acts like they have the inside scoop with some schmuk named EJ Hrdak or whatever trying to make a name for himself, and it turns out to be misinformation, what a shocker that is.

E$PN is a joke. You all need to see the light for once.

And as for the NHL, the owners and players, go :I starred in Brokeback Mountain: yourselves and have a nice life, now Im officially done with that league for good.

God bless you

The sport doesn't need a bandaid, it needs a system that really work and work fairly for everyone.  Blow the whole thing up, start it up in October using replacement players and a whole new series of rules.  All these NHL guys went elsewhere and took jobs from  minor league players, so let the NHLers get a taste of their own medicine.

Quickly enough, they'll start crossing the line, and three years from now no one will really care what happened in 2005.

Amen.

Looks like http://hockeyrumors.blogspot.com/ has beaten the AP to the story.

Bill Daly is saying it is too late for the season. I am hearing five owners blocked it at the last second because 45 was higher than 42.5..one source saying of the five, "they simply didn't want to play this year. You have to feel terrible for the players who worked so hard were told they had a deal, went to NY and then this...Is it over? Who knows...it looks like it.

It will be written that the NHL died today because five owners couldn't live with a cap 2.5million higher, that they didn't have to spend.....and 700 players will never see a cap in the 40's again, never above 35...

I am ashamed to be a part of something so ludicrous. All of you deserved so much more...I hope, for their sake, this is some sort of posturing...but right now there is only silence...and that is pathetic and you should be angry.

Glad they did not put together a halfassed deal......the small markets are really having a lot of influence here.

Welcome the players back to a 35 million dollar cap sometime in the summer.

<_<

Either that, or break the damn "union" in half.

And divide all saLaries by half. Someone figured that the 42.5 cap would have given the players a higher average salary than they have now. 35 million would be about right.

I could really give a rats ass about hockey and whether they ever play again.

What's really unfortunate about this mess are the "innocents" that are being crushed. There's hundreds of others that depend on that sport for revenue and they're getting screwed. Not everyone involved with a pro sport makes 7.65 million per. Some of them sell hot dogs to feed their kids.

The Fan 590 in Toronto has just said the Hockey talks between players and owners did not go well today and have ended  with the Players union saying there will be no more talks .  They are going to address the media shortly.

Its said the hard line owners would not allow a $45 million dollar cap .

Try a $25 million cap- if that. If anyone in the NHL thinks revenues will even approach 1/2 of what they were before, then they are on crack. Judging by the insanity these people showed off the last few days, they must be on something. They pissed off even the most hardcore fans today. They must not have believed that they were #5 of 5 in major sports and now they are even with Arena Football, Indoor Lacrosse and Soccer and sinking fast. Almost all of their revenue was from ticket sales. They threw most of that away this past week. Yet the owners are now saying they want to get a deal done by May 1st so they can sell season tickets. Someone should tell these people to stop sniffing glue. Nobody will buy season tickets after the crap that was pulled this week. When ESPN opts out of the last year of their contract, the NHL will not get a nickle in TV money. They should just fold the whole thing. The NHL is DEAD.

Exactly! If the players think they're going to get a $45 million cap next year, they're smoking wacky weed. They'll be lucky to get half that whenever the next CBA gets penned - if ever.

Watch for the arenas to be booking all kinds of events now - flower shows, flea markets, weddings... The owners may find those more profitable than running an NHL franchise was.

About 2/3 of the players are not under contract beyond this year. I think most of the rest have one year left on their contract. I wonder what happens then if the league folds. Are all the contracts simply voided? Or, if the NHL wants to pursue a season next year would they have to re-incorporate the league as a different legal entitiy to avoid their obligations under those existing contracts? What would they name it?

So many questions, and NO answers.

Dude, you got that right! The cap will now HAVE to be linked to rev's because whenever they play, rev's are going to be mighty low. Also, if the NHLPA takes this to the NLRB or wherever these negotiations go, I don't see how they can get a favorable ruling IF the clubs can honestly produce financials showing losses. How can the PA expect a favorable ruling that says the owners should lose money. Any logical ruling has to entitle ownership to profits
