BarleyNY Posted April 19, 2016 Author Posted April 19, 2016 That's all very disappointing. I was hoping he had a reason for missing beyond "I didn't feel like going." At least he's not injured. I'd like to see some leadership out of the guy though. I've read where other posters have referred to him being a leader, but I've never seen proof of it. Being the only player to miss voluntary workouts certainly points to the opposite. Posting a picture of himself on an all-nighter gambling at Hannah's while his teammates are all at those workouts is beyond stupid - and it is disrespectful to his teammates. If Watkins stays healthy and has a great season then nobody will care about stuff like this. But if he gets injured or doesn't have a great year, you can bet it will come back up.

Yea but that was Sunday and he was at Harrahs Cherokee in North Carolina. Honestly, I don't care, it's voluntary. There are loads of limitations on what they can do while there so it's basically a conditioning program. They can't even talk to the coaches on the field.

I want him there too, and I believe he should be there. But Im really not going to get upset about it, or be "disappointed" in him.

This isn't a "leader" decision. And though they can't work with the coaches in the field, they are having meetings. Why miss that voluntarily? I will never understand that. Of course I will forget about it if it doesn't affect him on the field but right now it ticks me off. Edited April 19, 2016 by YoloinOhio

Ya, who knows, maybe he had this vacation planned and has been planned. No point in getting upset or being disappointed. Kyle Williams wasn't there and either was Sentreal, so for me, it's not a big deal. the optics look bad considering he's the only one not there, presumably by choice, and he's said that he wants to be a leader. Shouldn't he *want* to be there? Edited April 19, 2016 by YoloinOhio
RyanC883 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I think Bruce Smith skipped voluntary workouts and worked out around his home in VA. Some of the elite athletes have routines. Perhaps he had a family event and couldn't make the first voluntary round.

He still could have showed up to he facility for the meetings, couldn't he? Gilmore hasn't been cleared and he was at the facility. So was Easley and so was Hughes, who were both not cleared. Again, still at the facility. Edited April 19, 2016 by Wayne Cubed

So to me there is a difference Edited April 19, 2016 by YoloinOhio
BarleyNY Posted April 19, 2016 Author Posted April 19, 2016 So running a youth camp the day before, and spending 1 evening with your friends who you rarely get to see, is that troubling? He's only miss 1 (now 2) conditioning workouts. What if he shows up tomorrow? Or next week? Every year there are threads like this about a player. Every year fans get angry. Every year it's forgotten by the time camp starts. If he shows up tomorrow, obviously that is better than if he doesn't show up at all. Let's see where this goes. The youth camp thing is nice and all, but he should be at workouts with his teammates. Stuff like that is great in a player's free time, but he's got work he should be doing - even if it is voluntary. I'd like to see some leadership from Watkins and he hasn't been a leader. He hasn't exactly been an ironman either. And that's the big rub here for me. While we are playing the "what if game", what if he misses significant voluntary workout time and then gets dinged in training camp like he did two years ago? Or gets injured in the season on non-contact plays like he's done two years running? Posting those pics while the rest of his teammates were in workouts was a d**k move as well. I'd wager that he's not going to get a lot of sympathy if he does gets dinged. And I already covered this, but it will all be forgotten if everything goes well for him. But if it doesn't, then it won't. The exception I don't mind on stuff like this is for older vets who are prone to wear down over the season. If those guys are excused, no big deal. You know what you're getting with a 10 year vet and you know that those players will be in proper shape. But even those players are in now.

FireChan Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Will Sammy complain there is no one to call out teammates again this year?

Jauronimo Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 CTE? Possibly. Which is why they should be tested regularly throughout the season.

Gugny Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Didn't Bruce usually skip half of training camp too? After he proved he was one of the best at what he did, as part of winning teams, yes.
