Mark Vader Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I moved to Las Vegas in 2001. Since then, I have seen that this town has been starved for professional sports. There are many transplanted Californians in Las Vegas that are excited about the Raiders moving to Las Vegas. Also, with this being a destination city, visiting fans will make a pilgrimage here to see their favorite team play. What would cause a team to fail? The Raiders had very bad attendance in recent years until they started winning. The 49ers attendance has been abysmal. Jacksonville has had poor attendance. With the TV revenue and other income streams, attendance is a secondary factor in the success of an NFL franchise. The only reason teams are moving now is because they can not get public financing for a new stadium Las Vegas set a record for the amount of public financing provided by the home city. $750,000,000. Local reporters are hailing this as the biggest thing to ever hit the city of Las Vegas. UNLV will benefit by playing in a world class stadium and may be able to eventually move to a power 5 conference. Not to mention that every Friday there is a steady stream of Californians clogging westbound Interstate15 from Los Angeles. Many of which are Raider fans. Many locals are transplants and have loyalties with teams in their previous home towns are so excited and state that the Raiders are now their second favorite team. NASCAR just awarded this city a 2nd annual race because the spring race is now one of the most profitable and well attended race on their schedule. As a sidebar, a local ESPN affiliate was figuring the 2020 Raiders schedule and thinks that the Bills could be playing a game in Vegas that year. The Las Vegas Raiders will not only succeed, they may become the new "America's Team" You can bet on it! That's quite a sales pitch you've made. I agree with a lot of what you say. Although the 49'ers attendance thing is not a big issue. Also your optimism on UNLV eventually going to a power 5 conference, is more than a tad contrived. Aside from that, your points are valid. Visiting teams fans will love the idea of going to Las Vegas for a game. You are correct that when 2020 rolls around, and if the NFL chooses to keep the continued schedule rotation format, the Bills would play a road game against the Raiders.
TSOL Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/28/oakland-councilman-wants-raiders-out-now/ Its like your wife divorcing you then saying shes gonna stay at the house with you for up to three more years. Messy...
Domdab99 Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Phoenix is hotter than Vegas and doesn't have any of the fun. Sure, I like golfing in Scottsdale...but that's not Phoenix.

Messy... More like you getting divorced with ex-wife getting house and you staying there for 3 years because no where to go. This happened with a friend of ours and she continued to allow her husband stay and he is still there after she remarried and moved in with new husband.

I can understand that it may look like I have been drinking too much Las Vegas kool aid, But there has been discussion that with a world class stadium that UNLV may be invited to join the PAC 12. This has come from multiple sources

I'm a professor at UNLV, and I can tell you guys that this is the hope...both our football team and basketball team can't quite compete at the highest level yet because of the 2nd-rate facilities. I'm conflicted about the stadium because of the huge amount of money that otherwise could've gone to education, alternative energy programs, etc., but man, I'm excited about having the NFL in my town.

stuvian Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 The owners will get fabulously rich but the Raiders won't have homefield advantage because most of the fans will be from somewhere else. This will be the tipping point in the league's relationship with its fans.

long suffering bills fan Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Not only are Las Vegas residents excited about the Raiders coming to town, their are thousands of Raiders fans already here. People under estimate this city. The city of Las Vegas has 500,000 plus population, but the Las Vegas Valley population is over 2,000,000. Projections estimate that in 5 years the valley will grow to 3,000,000.

If the Pac-12 invites UNLV, then they have to also invite Boise State, Fresno State & San Jose State.
Roger Goodell Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 The NFL and ownership group are committed to providing the best possible outcome for the Raiders and their fans.

Would that include finding a place for them to play for the next 3 years? Apparently they may not be welcome at all in the Coliseum. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/19029448/oakland-alameda-coliseum-stadium-authority-want-oakland-raiders-2019

Among them are sharing Levi stadium in Santa Clara with the 49ers, San Antonio, and also remodeling Sam Boyd Stadium where the UNLV football team plays their home games.

Ironic if they end up playing at Levi's Stadium. Which is what they should have done in the first place. They may want to give a call to Stanford and California-Berkeley.
