Kaep was flat out terrible last season. He looked completely lost in the pocket with regard to reading coverage and decision making.

He was exposed in 2014 when DCs dared him to beat them from the pocket. He is a disaster back there.

2014 Kaep, while highly ridiculed, still had a + year for QB's on the stat side while playing hurt. But you're right, his play did regress for some of the reasons mentioned. I think consensus opinion is Tyrod should improve based on experience. What's lost is that experience also pits him against the increased knowledge defenses have in playing him. DC's will do the same thing with Taylor in 16 as Kaep got in 14. Taylors athleticism is elite, so that's not easy, but I really do think his height hurts him. He doesn't find windows of vision, he tries longer to find wide open vision. Everything gets delayed, play breaks down, sometimes good things happen, but it's inconsistent. On timing routes/first reads, deep balls, he has timing and accuracy. He also seems to care about the mental part. So hopefully he avoids Kaeps progression. He's an easy guy to root for and I really hope he proves my concerns wrong.

Lots of comments highlighting Tyrod's adequacy... Perfectly well and good, despite my doubts about him being a permanent answer....Still the fact remains that if #5 goes down we are in very big trouble... We absolutely need to draft his potential replacement this year.

He wasn't desperate prior to last season when he had both Manning and Osweiler, so what's your point?

The obvious point is that, since QB has no real QB a season after the SB, his sniffing around Kaep is hardly a ringing endorsement. If he still had Osweiller, he wouldn't be looking at Kaep.

We saw DCs adjusting to TT throughout last season. But he showed marked improvement operating from the pocket as the season progressed. He flat out made teams pay at times. Kaep has yet to show that kind of consistency. I like TTs trajectory based on how he finished the year.

Not too concerned about his height, although I didn't like his tendency to bend his knees too much while dropping back, which made him shorter for no reason. He's a little more upright now and it really is more about finding lanes than seeing over people. If he can improve on moving in the pocket to find open throwing lanes, a la Brees for example, he'll be OK.

The similarities between Kaepernick and Taylor is they're both extremely athletic..... And that's about the extent of that. Taylor is quicker and more agile. Kap is the more physical specimen. Taylor is waaaaaay more accurate than Kap, especially on deep passes. Taylor definitely has more of a QB makeup between the ears and doesn't seem to rattle like Kap either. Hopefully Taylor continues to progress where as Kap has regressed.

Certainly not the best environment to thrive in last year, but Gabbert showed far better than Kaep.

26 CB - I'm with you. People keep remembering Kaep from his first 1.5 years as he replaced Smith that first year. Kaep had a steady decline where not last year, but the last two years were terrible. They had all of their studs previous to the retirements, and had Harbaugh and finished 8-8. Kaep's accuracy, decision making abilities, and vision of the field regressed.

He was supposed to get better each year as the excellent QB's have done. Rothlesberger may have won the SB his rookie year, but was better each year thereafter.

TT will now not have a QB controversy, hopefully more synergy with his weapons, and be trusted by the coaching staff to throw quickly over the middle to be more of a complete QB. Lastly, he only missed the two games he was illegally horse collared. He did play knicked up as many players have to do in the season. He's not fragile, and made better and better decisions about when to go out of bounds, slide, and throw away.

With all of that said, he has a lot to prove this year, so he can get paid in 2017 when we have the money. If he does not improve, Whaley made the right decision in holding off, and I'm assuming whoever we draftat QB next month will at least have one year to learn the speed of the NFL game.

My point about Tyrod when he was being pursued by suitors such as the Bills and Broncos after his contract with Baltimore expired. It had nothing to do with Kaep.
