Well, if you think about it, two teams in the last 16 seasons have won the Super Bowl with a number one defense and subpar QB play. So, he makes a pretty good point.

How many teams have missed the playoffs with the #1 defense?

I think most people want a playoff birth and considering Denver just won the Super Bowl with below average QB play its not a stretch to say this team is in the playoffs and a legitimate threat in the AFC with the 2014 defense and not Rex's cluster !@#$ of a defense last year.

Denver not only had the best defense in the league, they also had superior coaching.

The Bills had/have neither, unfortunately.

Not many teams win the super bowl without a great defense AND a great coaching staff.

We had the defense in place two years ago. Miraculously, we downgraded at the HC position, leading to a major downgrade at DC. Sigh.

San Diego missed the playoffs with the number 1 defense AND offense.

By your measure of subpar QB play then lets include Roethlisberger 2004, Dilfer 2001, Johnson 2003, Peyton 2016. All of those teams won in spite of QB play. 4 out of 16 sounds a lot like 1/4 of the time, which sound like an exception so large that the rule needs re-examining.

But you make a great point. Why even concern ourselves with half of the game of football? Its all about having a top ten-ish QB (as measure by frequency and anecdotal timing of 3 and outs, ignoring all other statistics). Once you get yourself an Eli or a Flacco, defense is irrelevant. It was Eli's clutch throws that slowed down the game's most prolific offense and Flacco's haircut that stumped the Pats.

Oh hell, while we're at it, let's count 2001, 2003 and 2004 Brady! HOLY CRAP! Half the time the Super Bowl is won by teams that don't have good QB's!

Yes, lets. Does Roethlisberger get a pass as a rookie just because he eventually developed into an elite QB? Not sure why Johnson gets a pass.

What's your point?

Not sure how much more plainly I can state it.

25% of the last 16 super bowls were won by defense in spite of subpar QB play. Yet you claim having the 1st, 15th, or 32nd ranked D is irrelevant. It was a flippant and stupid statement on page 1 and nothing has changed since.

Shameless!

You doth protest too much.

You just can't wrap your head around being wrong and want to find some hidden truth....that doesn't exist....to explain why.

The plain truth is that they were poorly prepared, undisciplined and confused until late in the season......that is on Rex Ryan.

If there were issues acclimating players to the defense it should have been addressed more assertively during TC.......and they've all said as much.

I expect they will be much better next season even if they have lesser talented players at 3 or 4 positions on defense.

But as others have said........2015 was a skid mark that can't be scrubbed from RR's resume.

Amen.

Out of the 19 first downs by the NY Giants in that game the Bills defense gave them 7 first downs. 17 penalties in all for 135 yards against the Bills in that game which borders on outright crazytown for lack of team discipline.

I still have difficulty in understanding how Ryan kept his job or why some keep defending the guy.

So if my point doesn't stand, and you seek to make a counter point, you've seen enough to think we can win a Super Bowl with TT if he played like he did last year?

Yeah. Penalties. Rex was the key difference in the Bills going from second most penalized team in 2014 to tied for most penalties in 2015. Couldn't have done it without him.

Why not? Wasn't TT the difference between going from the 2nd worst 3 and out team to the the first?

You mean when they went from 26th to 31st? More importantly: who made that argument?

Who were you blaming the increased 3 and outs on? Certainly not injuries, that's a defense only argument. Certainly not new scheme, that's a defense only argument. Certainly not the loss of locker room leaders, that's a defense only argument.

When talking about TT's improvement, did you not imply that his performance dictated our 3rd down success rate?

If their defense played like it did in 2014 I'd say maybe. They definitely would've made the playoffs and would've beaten the Texans or Bengals(minus Dalton) for sure.

Still it would've been a very good season, something we haven't seen in years.

If the defense had played like it did in 2014 with the running game and Quarterback play we got last year I believe we are a 12 win team. Call me mad if you like but I do. On last year's powder puff schedule where we played the two weakest divisions in all of football we might even have been in the conversation for a number 1 seed.

You surely are a hatter!

Yes, Taylor can win a super bowl behind a dominant defense like Manning just did. How many more times must it happen before you can accept it?

That wouldn't have been relevant, according to the Cat.
