Sean Payton/Saints agree to 5 year $45M contract extension

Recommended Posts

Not my point. I think he is but his number needs to drop so they can add players. Not blaming Brees either.

They just restructured not long ago. The big one year hit was going to come somewhere. The extra 8 million against this year's (increased by 12 million) cap isn't what's holding the Saints back.

It may not be the only thing holding them back but a $30M hit for one player can be a problem.

thats why the plan is a 4 year extension this offseason, that will bring him into retirement.

but in the grand scheme $30m single year cap hit on drew is far less offensive than

12m cap hit for junior galatte this year and a 6.3m cap hit for brandon browner - neither of whom are on the team.

Or last years dead space of 9m for jimmy graham, 6m for ben grubbs, and another 5.5m for galette and 5m for lofton.

thats right, the galette cut is nearly 18m in dead space spread across 2 years.

graham, galette, browner.... all guys on brand new deals. it would be like us cutting hughes and clay and mccoy this year after big deals last year.

See NoSaints post--if Brees was only getting his average, it would have saved 8 million for one year only (in a cap that went up 12 million).

This is what it cost, this year, to have the best QB in the league (statistically, almost every year) on your team as it rebuilds.
