There is an area at work where only approved cellphones are allowed. There is a security checkpoint to enter.

A person at work was just promoted (double salary), which required him to go through the checkpoint. After filling out some forms, they told him it would be processed in 3 days. Then he'll get a shiny sticker to paste to the back.

On the first day (no sticker), they confiscated his phone at the checkpoint, to be returned on his way out.

On day two, he decided to sneak the phone into the building. While texting inside, someone saw the lack of sticker and reported it to security. They escorted him out. Fired.

He's suing to get his job back; says he needed a cellphone for emergencies.

He's in his 30's.

not smart but why 3 days?

They made everyone with an approved cellphone update to a new reflective metallic sticker, yesterday. (the newest version). I had the old laminated matte version which suddenly wasn't allowed anymore. I didn't see anyone sneak a phone inside this time.

On an unrelated note, someone else got fired for showing up to work drunk on St. Patrick's day. Guy was in his 20's. It's been exciting at work lately. I think there might be a meeting on fire-able offenses soon.

Here's my take on this............wait I just got a text.

No clue. I think that's just how long it takes HR to log the phone details into the system. I've seen it go through the next day, but usually 3.

While we aren't allowed to use the camera feature, they have to let them inside since all cellphones have them. I've yet to see someone's phone not get approved. (lately).

What difference does that make? It's the policy; as an employee you don't get to pick and choose which policies you observe based on your own interpretation and opinion on their necessity. And if you don't know you can be fired for violating a policy which your employer obviously takes very seriously then I can't think of a better way to learn that lesson.

Let's not look for lame excuses where they don't exist.

You know all those stories were everyone comments on how kids are being pussified and lack respect and common sense and all that stuff? Guess what -- those kids are now in the workforce.

at some work places not all policies are followed to the letter and so breaking the rules isn't always a big deal.

It's been discussed at work how severe the punishment was for such a "minor" offense. There's people supporting both sides of this. Yes he's an idiot, but maybe they should have just given him a warning not to do it again.

FYI: cellphones were not allowed at all prior to 2008. The company had to make the exception because so many people "needed" their phone. The guy was working here during those times. It's well known. He's a 15yr employee.

The salary bump is over 4yrs. He didn't make it 2 days. There were a lot of applicants (only in-house). Now we're wondering if someone else will get the job or will they wait for the lawsuit to be resolved. I'm wondering if he has a case. Are cellphones a right?

Absolutely! it's the first step in our evolution to Cyborgs ^_^

Do you think someone was gunning for his job, and used this to eliminate him?

That was one of the first things that came to my mind. :pirate:

A lot of people wanted that job. Seriously, who looks at people's cellphone stickers?

Definitely seems fishy. I mean the guy gets promoted and probably figures it's no big deal he uses his phone since he was using it before.

And at some work places policies need to

be followed to the letter or you get fired. There are many careers where you're dealing with other people's personal information and the security of that is taken very seriously. And some of that personal/private information is proprietary to the company and they also take protecting that very seriously.

As I've mentioned on PPP that I am strictly forbidden from using anything other than a secured email for client communications or I get fired. That's why what Hillary did with her email sever is such a big deal.

Yeah... I wonder what they all do. Why wait "3 days" just for a sticker... What are they doing w/the phone?

Not sticking up for the dumbass... I just wonder what it is all about? Place sounds like "invasion of the body snatchers":

I don't know what business the OP works in, but many companies have valuable trade secrets that give them a competitive advantage. If you want to be able to go after people who steal them, one of the things you have to be able to demonstrate in court is that you took reasonable steps to keep the information secret. So companies that care about maintaining a competitive advantage do things like setting up checkpoints to enter areas that contain confidential information.

Trade secrets take various forms - - could be scientific research info, could be customer information, could be any type of info that gives the company an advantage over competitors that don't have that info.

Just spitballing here, but if the company lets in all camera phones after somehow logging them, my guess is that they want to have the ability later, if the employee quits and goes to work for a competitor, to more easily discover exactly how that phone was used in the days and months before the employee quit.

FWIW, if some other employee quits in the future and tries to take some of the company's trade secrets to his new employer, the company can point to the firing of this idiot as proof that they not only set up policies to protect their confidential information, but actually enforce those policies.

In the long run, if the company really does have confidential information that gives it an advantage over its competitors, then keeping that information confidential helps the company stay in business so that all of its employees can continue to have jobs.

Yeah... This (OP) doesn't sound like one of those companies... Unless the OP can explain better why they are so (what it sounds like) subjective & arbitrary (3 days for a sticker, even know they know the phone is okay).

Again, not siding w/said dumbazz... But a lot more info would be helpful. For all we know, it could be a MicroSoft/Apple thing and what OS or color headphones somebody is using.

?? More info please!!! ;-)

It sounds like some other places where I worked.

In my case the metallic foil sticker would go over one of the ports and I was told removal was reason for firing; I told them I needed to use that port when not at work and I was told put it back on then after use but make sure I get a new one if it starts to stop sticking and having it fall off was no excuse. Some models were prohibited entirely.

It also sounds like fired person was promoted to management and doing idiotic stuff like bringing phone right after promotion is pretty dumb even if you consider rule dumb.

Sounds like SF. When we first moved here to the Bay Area my wife and I called SF "the city of unenforced laws."

I usually work out at a health club early in the morning every day before going to the office.

And, at that time of day, there are not a lot of people there, so you get to notice the "regulars" who show up there.

There is one guy who's there all of the time who is addicted to his cell phone.

I watched him this morning for several minutes, and here is what he did:

  • Sat on a workout bench, staring at his cell phone for 30 seconds, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did one set of lat pulldowns
  • Sat on a workout bench, staring at his cell phone for 30 seconds, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did a second set of lat pulldowns
  • Walked over to the drinking fountain, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Got a drink of water
  • Walked over to the leg press machine, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Set down his phone and put weights on the machine
  • Picked up his phone and sat down on the leg press machine, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did one set of leg presses
  • Picked up his phone while sitting on the leg press machine, staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did a second set of leg presses
  • Stood up, picked up his cell phone, walked over to the drinking fountain, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Got a drink of water
  • Walked over to the row machine, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did a set of rows
  • Sat on the row machine for two minutes, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
  • Did a second set of rows
  • Sat on the row machine for two minutes, while staring at his cell phone, scrolling with his thumb
And this is a 4:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning!
