ExiledInIllinois
Choosing to go to a church where polish is the predominant language isn't the same thing as refusing to learn english and expecting everyone to accommodate you. I bet she could still communicate in english right? Even better than me. :-) The community and era was in a simpler time not much interaction outside that community. She depended on my parents for a lot. ALL my grandparents never had driver's license... My grandfathers could drive, just never owned vehicles... That is what the children were for. I do get your point though. Now... My wife's grandparents were from Italy, right off the boat. They spoke nothing but Italian @ home... Wife's grandmother very broken English when she needed it. Grandfather another story, fought for the US in Italy during WWII... So he had English nailed down... Yet, every extra dime he made, he would send back home to relatives in Italy.
