jethro_tull Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Tyler Matakevich, ILB Temple. He is now a four-year starter and had the most career tackles by any active player in the FBS at the end of last season. Matakevich also became just the seventh defender in FBS history with four straight 100-tackle seasons. "Mat is the heart and soul of that defense, everything goes through him," an NFC North executive told NFLDraftScout.com during the season. "That's something that shows up on film and during practice. He knows his physical limitations, but works like the devil to max out all of his senses. You don't have as much production as he has just by accident." STRENGTHS: The unquestioned leader of the Owls, Matakevich doesn't play with hesitation, showing terrific first step quickness and anticipation to read and react with little wasted movement. He takes smart angles with strong hands to make finger-tip tackles and take-on blocks, shedding to unglue himself from bodies. Has terrific timing as a blitzer and plays like a controlled mad man, hitting another gear once he sees red. He also does a nice job floating in zone coverage to attack throwing lanes and break up throws http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1983609/tyler-matakevich
QuoteTheRaven83 Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Way too small to play ILB or OLB for Rex's defense. Just look at who Rex has had over the years. Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, David Harris, Terrell Suggs, Adalius Thomas. Small LBs like Matakevich doesn't fit into Rex's defense. He would've fit in nicely with a Schwartz defense, definitely not Rex's.
KD in CA Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Yeah, he looked pretty good against Notre Dame; from the stats I assume he looked like that all year. He trades some size and athleticism for some extra smarts and motivation. I think he'd be a fine mid-round pick. Plus he's from Connecticut!
LeGOATski Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Hard to tell if he'll transition well to the NFL. He was in a great system under a coach who played LB. So, he was definitely coached well in college.
John from Riverside Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I think there is a strong chance we go after that ILB from the jets in free agency......unless our 19th pick is used on one. I just dont know what they are thinking right now at 19......LB or DL (or OL?) I do know this....if Doug Whaley can find Darby in the middle of the SECOND round........we are in good hands
Buffalo Barbarian Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I like the his instincts but is lacking in physical ability

Saxum Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 He appears to be a bit slow for a smaller LB. It appears he came from a good coached defense which teaches him how to tackle but how is the school's conditioning, nutrition and strength coaching? is this a college player who is near his physical prime or one with some Rusty Jones-level work could turn into a great defense player?
Webster Guy Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 The NFL ILB catch 22: Gotta be big and strong enough to shed blocks, which in many cases is a 300 pounder, but still be quick enough to fly to the ball. Hard to find both.

Hard to find both. look at the little guys and how long they last. look at the big guys and look how they can play for a long time. its like kiko alonso vs. brandon spikes.
