Thank you, seems fair enough I guess but only if we get a good deal more from him than 40 yards a game.

He's worth more too (in a way) because they took him from a division rival. Hurts them, helps the Bills. Clay's impact on the offense last year was noticeable, he's perfect for Roman's system and creates a variety of mismatches. They absolutely overpaid, but it's not an outrageous contract.

He will need to play well but it's not as crazy as some make it seem. If you take the full 5 year value down by 1-1.5m he falls back to 10th

Top players get paid a lot. Is he a top 3 tight end? Probably not. Does he fall into the mid teens? Not that low. So he's up in the mix of where he belongs, roughly.

He belongs there if we get production from him like he's capable of. We can talk about versatility and blocking and how the defense has to account for him lining up different places but its flat-out stupid to pay 9m a year just for that. If he gets 40 yards a game Whaley won't let him go on sucking 9m a year from our available cap for very long. For a guy as big and as quick as he is, with his hands and elusiveness, we should be able to get a lot more from him than we did last year.

He made some nice plays for us last year. Hopefully his health and another year with Tyrod should help.

Honestly this team has good pass catchers,McCoy is dangerous, Sammy #1, Clay, Woods has in the past made unbelievable catches and he wasn't healthy last year.

Maybe a rookie WR steps up a bit, maybe Hogan doesn't "relax". This offense can't still take another step in the passing game. Tyrod should be working on his crossing route, mid inside passes.

Even more so, the top 3 TE's usually don't hit the open market. Sometimes you have to pay top 10 players top 5 or top 3 money if you want them to come as FA's. It's the nature of free agency.

In this style of offense (run heavy), he won't have Antonio Gates type of numbers. He's an important cog in the offense.

Agreed. But when you pay a guy as an elite TE, you don't just completely ignore what kind of production you get from him. Again, watch, if he continues to get 40 yards a game, Whaley won't let him make 9m a year for very long.

Its not like his production has to be exactly in line with his contract, but ballpark it. When a guy is paid as an elite tight end, some receptions, yards and touchdowns should follow, no?

With the restructure it makes it very difficult for Whaley to ever cut him. Major consequences against the cap in doing so.

No doubt you are correct, but it's also a matter of Roman making the calls within the design of the offense to exploit his talent and Tyrod growing his game to use the middle of the field on a more consistent basis.

Whaley by making this move locked in 3 of the last 4 years essentially, and that's after seeing last year.

I agree completely.

edit- My bet is he's hoping Roman and Tyrod can get more than 40 yards a game from this matchup nightmare as time goes on.

he is a complete TE. Which tbh there aren't a lot of in the league. If you watch the all-22 he is a major part of what they do. He did miss time with injury which impacted stats. I think if they had been in playoff contention he could have returned earlier. Wasn't considered a serious injury, just happened at end of year. Jmo. He's a very good player and fits the offense like a glove.

I would not be surprised if everyone knew the restructure was coming when he signed the contract last year. The way it looks to me, It was designed to draw him from division rival in 2015 and be ripe for restructure in 2016. It's not that crazy of a contract.
