Really not so sure it's their ignorance as much as they have an agenda (certainly not a hidden one) and if they keep starting and posting threads like this they can keep getting their beliefs out there and convince eachother they are right. Surprising there aren't more threads out there such as "Buffalo gets hit with big snow storm". The contents will show how this storm is due to Whaleys and Brandons ineptness. Whatever can be blamed on them is fair game.

People's ignorance on the salary cap continues to baffle me. You would think after having threads about this every week people would finally start to understand. Guess not.

When you have the most players under contract and are over the cap and will have to release players to get under and create cap space it means absolutely nothing.

We have 67 players under contract. That's a big number. No one else in the AFCE has more than 60.

That's 67 players we can keep if we want. But we can jettison them too. It's a position of strength. These 67 players cannot court other teams but we still can court other players.

But this situation artificially inflates our cap number for now. Clearly not all these 67 players will make our final 53 man roster. But until we release a bunch of them - which we will inevitably do - our cap number looks high.

I guess the big questions are who we will release to get down to 53 and - more importantly - who we will release to get down to $155 million (or whatever the final 2016 number is).

There is no artificially inflating the cap going on. The cap number of them being the ONLY team over the cap right now is already in the context of the top 51.

So in turn should it mean nothing if a team is under the cap but does not have enough players signed?

See what I did there?

Me having the least cash in my wallet doesn't mean I have the worst financial situation, as an example of how superficial this post is with regards to analyzing a cap situation

This is good news. I just checked my money clip and I have one dollar.

Explain it to me

Fans are praising Whaley for having the most players under contract but it doesn't mean anything when you have to cut players, starters really from the top 51 (that count against the cap) to get under and free up space. Also, there is complete fodder after the 51 so you are not going to be filling your starting roles with 54-67 on that list. Resources such as free agency and the draft then have to be used to fill those roles.

We have the least space but we have the most players under contract too. I'd rather be in our position than about 5 or 6 others in the league. We need to make some tough decisions this off-season but they are all within the realm of normal cap management. The Clay contract is a bit of a sickener though.

The bills have invested heavily on that DL and the FA signing of McCoy and Clay last year. They will have to pare it somewhere and they will be going after at the DL position:

Mario might be the biggest cut (possibly)

Kyle Williams may not be re-signed

Clay roster bonus will be restructured and converted to a regular bonus

The Kicker might get cut

I think it is more like

Whaley has done a pretty good job identifying talent...biulding a roster....and drafting players that contribute.

The bills need to make ONE move.....and they are under the cap.....ONE

The Mario Williams situation was always going to come about this year......the only thing that has changed is the decision becomes much easier based on performance

Mario

Clay

Leodis

Williams

Mario is gone.....the cap savings to sign our own comes from this ONE release

Clay was always going to get restructured......his contract was poison pilled so that Miami would not match......

Leodis will either take a pay cut or be gone.....we survived without him for most of the year anyway and this is where you draft, identify a young 3rd corner

Williams....perhaps the toughest cut

That is 3 players we wont miss unless they take pay cuts and one restructure.....of which cap savings can be rolled over to the next year.....to create enough cap room to sign our own players, sign draft picks, and some sign some tier B free agents.....NONE of those players above that would be cut would be irreplacable players based off changes in the D or based of last years performance......

So?

The rule of 51 applies at this time. That means only the top 51 players on the roster count toward the total cap number.

Yes I am aware of that but I don't accept that cutting Mario plus one or two mid range contracts kills us because we have some young if unheralded talent under contract.

Actually in some cases, there is. For example, SI wrote an article the other day which used the 168m payroll number as the reason they were way over the cap. Multiple sources have used the higher payroll or the lowest possible salary cap (which is unlikely to happen) to exaggerate the Bills situation because dire is more dramatic. The most likely situation is that they will be flush against the cap. They won't be players in free agency, but they aren't likely to lose players they'll miss (considering the way Mario was playing), and could very well emerge a better team.

The Bills have a slightly above average age team, with an average talent level. There are almost no players with playoff experience on the roster, so no one really knows how they would perform if they actually make the playoffs. This is Whaley's seventh offseason with the team. If he hadn't followed a series of very very bad GM's people would think his performance was pretty bad. But Bills fans persist in a number of myths.

1. LeSean McCoy is a top 3 back. He is not, he ran for a little over 800 yards at 4.4 yards per carry in 2016. Not awful, but not elite. There is a baseball quote from Babe Ruth "Yesterdays home runs don't win today's games". What ever McCoy's history or potential, in terms of actual production he is wasting valuable cap space.

2. Charles Clay is elite. Again five hundred yards and a couple of touchdowns is not elite performance. Highest paid TE in the leauge in 2015. Again wasted cap space.

3. Cutting Mario Williams doesn't hurt the team. Mario under performed his contract, but he is still one of the better defensive players on the team. The Bills will be worse without him.

4. Kyle Williams and Aaron Williams will return to form. This is possible, but based on their ages, types of injuries and the history of the NFL, it will be really lucky if both players return to form. If they don't and Mario is cut, then only three of Nix defenders remain, Hughes, Dareus and Gilmore. The other defenders, other than Darby, added by Whaley are all dime a dozen players, that don't make the Bills better than anyone else. There is no reason to expect the Bills defense to improve this year. Anything is possible but the arrow is pointing down here.

5. The Bills are set at QB. Again maybe, but the eagles were set with Nick Foles, the Redskins with RGIII and the niners with C. Kaepernick (all of whom made the playoffs), and then they weren't. Results on this are still out.

glass half full: thats what we have capoligists for, we can get creative and make a bunch of moves, we'll be fine.

glass half empty: almost all the other teams in the league have more cap room to be creative with than we do.
