BuffaloBillsForever Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) And yet, every season teams do restructuring to make cap space. Wonder why? All contracts are not created equal as well as the risk involved. In this case with the disaster that is Clay's contract it makes sense NOT to restructure considering the ramifications of the dead money involved and and future cap hits especially for an injury prone player that has stayed healthy once in his five year career. The Bills restructuring Clay would just be another example of Doug Whaley's myopic vision putting together this team. Edited February 26, 2016 by BuffaloBillsForever

His cap hit over his last 3 years will be $9M, which is quite a lot. To put that in context, Gronk's will be ~$10M. Edited February 26, 2016 by FireChan

It is a bad contract, but kicking some of the cap charges down the road only helps. Not only do the Bills need the space now, but the cap is going up an average of 8% a year. That means there is an 8% per year discount per year on every cap dollar moved into future years. Why not do that?

It makes sense when you consider his inabillty to stay healthy and chronic knee problems that have plagued him throughout his career. Edited February 26, 2016 by BuffaloBillsForever

That makes no sense. The dead money if Clay is released (or traded) would be a cap hit THIS YEAR without the restructure. Oh, and it was guaranteed so the Bills would have to take the hit anyway. The only choice is whether to take it now or spread it out equally over 2016-2019. It was a stupid contract, yes. But the restructure only delays some of the cap hit, it doesn't create any new dead money. Oh, and as I said before - the future hits are a smaller percentage of the overall cap, by 8% per year (on average).

26CornerBlitz Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 @JoeBanner13 Bills head down the predictable path to cap hell. We have seen this before.
Deranged Rhino Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 So, with Clay restructured they have a little over $8 mill in cap space now if my math is right. Free up a few million more with some restructures and Stephon's extension... and we haven't even addressed Mario's situation yet. "Worst cap situation" is becoming a bit more hyperbolic by the week.

We all (or at least most of us) knew that they were going to maneuver to get under the cap and retain players they believe are key to their future success.
4merper4mer Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Clay's contract was specifically designed to get him on the team and then be restructured. This is just a step that was always going to be taken. He is a good player. i don't see the problem here at all.
Deranged Rhino Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 We all (or at least most of us) knew that they were going to maneuver to get under the cap and retain players they believe are key to their future success. True.
BuffaloBillsForever Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 @JoeBanner13 Bills head down the predictable path to cap hell. We have seen this before. It's moves like the Clay restructure that will allow them to continue on that path. Whaley's myopic plan of win now and not winning has and will continue to have dire consequences on this franchise.

The way the contract was previously structured Clay got a guaranteed roster bonus of $10M in March. The restructure converts that to a $10M signing bonus that will be spread out over 4 years. That's it. The dead money goes up in future years because they aren't taking the whole hit this year - but it doesn't go up to the numbers you state. Edited February 26, 2016 by BarleyNY
YoloinOhio Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Every team knows how to maneuver the cap. Happens every year that the media is like "ermagerd this team has no rooooom" and then they magically sign who they want because they employee people who can work the system.
