YoloinOhio Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 (edited) All Ohio State Lbs look the same to you huh? no they just happen to have similar situations/value when cut. They aren't really all *that* similar. FTR I do think JL value is higher I just don't think it is a ton more and could be system-specific. Edited February 23, 2016 by YoloinOhio

If your d line is good, your LBs will be to. Unfortunately after last year, I lack confidence in having a good line because of our "system."

Unfortunately after last year, I lack confidence in having a good line because of our "system."oh I know you were kidding but I actually thought about that when making the comparison and that it might sound lazy, but the more I thought about it the more similarities I saw just in how/why they were cut and what they could contribute. Obviously JL has more years left but he's not one of those "coveted" LBs.
3rdand12 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Ever the Silver-Lining finder. 4-4, you're a ray of pure sunshine in a cloudy off season! Thanks! He's a keeper and he is all ours!! oh I know you were kidding but I actually thought about that when making the comparison and that it might sound lazy, but the more I thought about it the more similarities I saw just in how/why they were cut and what they could contribute. Obviously JL has more years left but he's not one of those "coveted" LBs. so how does he compare to Spikes when he was here? similar skill set? you know where i am going here with my questions.

Just older and more of a field general. Edited February 23, 2016 by YoloinOhio
3rdand12 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 yes, similar IMO. Just older and more of a field general. Well than why did Ryan dump Spikes?
YoloinOhio Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 (edited) Well than why did Ryan dump Spikes?I don't think he did? Whaley said they wanted to re-sign Spikes, who was a FA. However the value he had placed on him to what they believed was a 2 down LB didn't match with the value spikes had on himself. They couldn't come to an agreement on money and Whaley wouldn't budge. He ended up signing with NE, but then got the DUI/hit and run and was cut before TC even started. He faces a 6 game suspension I believe at the point he signs with anyone, if he ever does. IMO it isn't that they didn't want him, they just didn't think he was worth what he thought he was worth for the number of snaps he'd be playing. He didn't even play that many snaps for Schwartz. Difference with JL there is, though he may now be viewed in a similar way, he did play 97% of defensive snaps for Rams in his career. Edited February 23, 2016 by YoloinOhio
DDD Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 waiting for someone to say...."if we can get him on the cheap"Ralph is cheap.

When Spikes did not get picked up i thought Bills would reach out to him. When the Bills looked lost after the Pats v1, I again thought geez get Spikes back here. Then of course he fell off the earth. 97% last year is not what i expected from a gut considered a liability in the pass game. color me surprised. I am warming up to him

I am warming up to him 97% def snaps for Rams over career ... May have been higher or lower last year but clearly a lot. I think he's looked at as a "liability" who can be targeted by offenses in the passing game when compared to your big time MLBs like Keuchly, Bobby Wagner, etc. and he's not getting any younger. Just think he could be of some value in this scheme at the right price.... Knowing he's not the ideal modern MLB at this stage of his career though Edited February 23, 2016 by YoloinOhio

Probably just as important as the front 3, if not MORE important. Front 3 does all the dirty work to keep the LBs clean but LBs are always the one that make the plays behind the LOS and in coverage. I believe we are in need of a solid leader next to Brown
YoloinOhio Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 understood. I believe we are in need of a solid leader next to Brown absolutely. And come to think of it, Rex really wanted David Harris last year and I'm sure a lot of that had to do with his knowledge of the D. But in terms of age and coverage ability I don't think he's *that* much different than JL in that regard.

Jets kinda protected him though, i thought.
YoloinOhio Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 hell i wanted David Harris once we knew we had Rex! Jets kinda protected him though, i thought. they overpaid IMO to keep him away, but "overpaying" is all relative to the value someone has to your team.

Front 3 does all the dirty work to keep the LBs clean but LBs are always the one that make the plays behind the LOS and in coverage. Disagree. I think the Jets have trash at Lb but are a good defense because of their d line. The 90s Bills had really good LBs but would get bullied in the SB because they were weak up the field. This system destroyed the strength of the team. Brown and Bradham were good players just a year ago. Now we are going to replace Mario and possibly shift Dareus or Williams around. It sucks.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I think we will def draft those replacements but Lets also not act like there are not players on this team right now I will give a for instance....I actually really like LB Powell who got hurt last season....he is a solid all around LB that was just starting to play well for us. If we are gonna make this work....then we need guys that we have been developing that did not come from 1st round picks to step up because not everybody can be a top 51 payed player I really feel like we have some players like that under contract right now I think we have some LB with potential stashed on the depth chart. LB is probably one of Whaley's best areas for talent evaluation, and judging by his track record he likes to follow the Steelers "Linebacker U" system where possible - draft a mid-round player, have him play ST and learn, bring him in his 2nd to 3rd year. The thing is, I do have a sense of skepticism as to whether "any decent LB who can play well" will anchor Rex's complex D. I think for it to function optimally, he needs at least one and maybe two superbly talented LB. I don't think he did? Whaley said they wanted to re-sign Spikes, who was a FA. However the value he had placed on him to what they believed was a 2 down LB didn't match with the value spikes had on himself. They couldn't come to an agreement on money and Whaley wouldn't budge. Yolo, the way I understand it to work, and please correct me if I'm mistaken, is that the coaches and GMs get together after the season ends and grade/value guys. So Whaley doesn't independently value guys, or shouldn't - the value he put on Spikes reflected Rex and Rex's staff opinion of Spikes value. So in a sense, Rex *did* dump Spikes, or have a hand in dumping Spikes, by putting a specific value on him, and by (apparently) not pushing to bring in someone who might directly replace him. I believe Rex thought Preston Brown might develop to be his next David Harris/Ray Lewis type. I thought PB played well in 2014 but last year showed he was over his head in Rex' system at MLB

Whaley publically stated he wanted to keep Spikes, but only at a certain price. As I recall it was not Brown who Rex thought would/could step up if he wasn't signed, it was Ty Powell who he had pegged. Edited February 23, 2016 by YoloinOhio
