truth on hold Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) One that stood out as far as under rated is Butch Byrd. Not familiar with him, but this guy had some serious stats. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000214805/article/buffalo-bills-alltime-underrated-overrated-players Per wikipedia still leads the team in picks, pick return yards, and pick 6's. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Byrd Edited February 13, 2016 by truth on hold
machine gun kelly Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Funny how Smerlas was the topic of another thread the last two days and he comes up here as most underrated Bill.
Steve Billieve Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Mine are maybe more from a league perspective. Bledsoe over Norwood under Guess I should have read the article first
xsoldier54 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Can't agree with Beebe. He didn't have the stats of the other receivers of his era because he was a complimentary piece. He played his role well and contributed when called upon.
atlbillsfan1975 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Beebe was really not that great of a receiver. Fast but never very reliable. He had a couple of big moments, like the author states. Lofton contributed more but often is overlooked by many. Lofton was the perfect compliment to Reed.
Rob's House Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Looking over the last 20 years mine are: Overrated - Jairus Tyrd (Honorable mention: Kiko Alonzo) Underrated - Antowain Smith
hondo in seattle Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 One that stood out as far as under rated is Butch Byrd. Not familiar with him, but this guy had some serious stats. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000214805/article/buffalo-bills-alltime-underrated-overrated-players Per wikipedia still leads the team in picks, pick return yards, and pick 6's. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Byrd Butch was a star in his time. Underrated now because he's been largely forgotten, but not underrated in the 60s. I was just a kid back then, learning to play football on the neighborhood streets. My little friends and I would say we were Butch Byrd after picking off a pass. Can't agree with Beebe. He didn't have the stats of the other receivers of his era because he was a complimentary piece. He played his role well and contributed when called upon. I do agree with Beebe a little. Wasn't a great route runner. Dropped too many balls. Wouldn't be remembered hardly at all if he hadn't played on great teams.
Formerly Allan in MD Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Byrd was far from underrated. He received significant props league-wide and in the press.
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Byrd was far from underrated. He received significant props league-wide and in the press. Agree with this because my dad who was a fan as far back as the 60s loved to talk about him. He was quick to point out he was an All Pro during the championship 60 s years. I disagree with Joe Ferguson being overrated, and I think the article is littered with several inaccuracies, not the best written. BTW, Ferguson played that game against the Chargers with such a badly injured ankle he could barely stand up.
jester43 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 underrated: Sam Cowart overrated: London Fletcher
Steve O Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Underrated: Charles Romes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Romes "...playing in every game for the Bills from his rookie season to 1986, starting every game from 1978 forward. Romes logged at least one interception in every year from 1978 to 1986; his 28 career interceptions are fourth in team history..."
fridge Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 How does Joe Ferguson even qualify to be overrated?
BobbyC81 Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Overrated by Bills management: Chris Kelsay. Underrated: Darryl Talley. He was the heart and soul of that Bills defense and was only in 2 Pro Bowls
Mark Vader Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Underrated: Phil Hansen Overrated: Nate Clements
Steve O Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 How does Joe Ferguson even qualify to be overrated? I remember one year one list had him top 10 underrated, another top 10 overrated
