Dopey Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 For all the talk about how big and strong he was, he acted like a little girl seeing a spider.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 If the Broncos were the ones down 16-10 in the SB in the 4th quarter and Peyton was in Cam's shoes, I'd be willing to bet he would have made an attempt at that ball. Old as dirt (NFL QB wise) bad back, bad hip, bad foot and all, and I am confident he would have done everything in his power to recover that ball. The SB was on the line there. That effort was inexcusable no matter how close you look at the replay or how you try to justify in Cam's eyes. Showed a real lack of heart IMO, which he seemed to display all game long. I'm sure Peyton would have made an attempt at the ball. But he's had what, 18 years and 2 bitter Superbowl losses to learn that these opportunities don't come lightly
Talley56 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 The last shot I saw of the play, it looked like a Denver lineman maybe had only an arm on it and if Cam had dove down with his body on it he easily could have taken it away from whoever had his arm on it. I may have seen it incorrectly however, IMO, at that point in the game, it was clear that if Denver recovered the fumble, they were SB champs. That was the play that basically ended Carolina's season-long journey for a championship. Therefore, even if a 300-pound lineman has pounced his entire body completely on top of it you still dive and go after the ball.

Rocky Landing Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Just saw this leaked footage of Newton having a conversation with Goodell, post-game:
Toledo Bill Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 During some games at the Rockpile... those end zone battles were highlights...
Prickly Pete Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 @Deadspin Ron Rivera has Cam Newton's back on that loose ball: http://deadsp.in/MBRi74A This article has the angle that shows he should have dove for it.
hondo in seattle Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 After watching the replay a few times, I think he was trying to anticipate the ricochet. In fact, he almost anticipates the ricochet correctly. After his odd hop back, Cam does go to the ground chasing the ball and it squirts right past him.
elroy16 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Pictures don't always show the whole picture, but between what 26Corner posted and the picture below, I'd be pissed if I were a Panther's fan. He sure looks like the closest one to the ball. Funny bounce or not, he should be on the ground trying to get the ball.
26CornerBlitz Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This article has the angle that shows he should have dove for it. He definitely should have IMO.
FireChan Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Cam admits he didn't go for it because he was afraid of getting hurt in the Super Bowl. Rough look. Joe Person @josephperson 2h2 hours ago Cam: "I don't dive on 1 fumble because the way my leg was-- it could have been (contorted) in a way. OK, you say my effort. I didn't dive... Joe Person @josephperson 2h2 hours ago "...down. I fumbled. That's fine. But we didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that" -- Cam This kid's rise and fall have been equally meteoric.
boyst Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This was a very humbling loss. We'll see.no. It wasn't. His reactions were the exact same to this as they were 4 yrs ago. What happens next, we all have our ideas. But he needs to grow.

Billsmovinup Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 It was a synopsis of his play the entire game. The moment got to him. It showed in the first quarter and continued throughout the day. He hesitated on the fumble and it sealed the Panthers fate. Not the reason they lost but the final nail in the coffin.
boyst Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 The thing about his fall is that he will get back up again. He has too much natural talent not to. At this rate I wonder about his confidence going forward; will he be able to achieve the success he speaks of and prove to even himself he can wear an "S" on his chest? It is going to be interesting next year in the first couple games. If the schedule is tough and they start off rough then Cam may be a little rattled still. They need a few soft opponents and he will be fine again. Growing pains or not, he needs to learn
Prickly Pete Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I wonder how he and Josh Norman are getting along...
26CornerBlitz Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Wow - WTF?!? Rise and Fall? Manziel is a classic example of a rise and fall. Cam? Ummm No!
Prickly Pete Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 (edited) I have played sports with guys very much like Newton. Great local athletes, the best player in a league, but would give off the attitude of "I played good enough, it's the rest of you that need to play better for us to win"...it's often true, but it's not good leadership, especially on the field. Marino often gave off that vibe, appearing to throw teammates under the bus. Edited February 9, 2016 by HoF Watkins

Marino often gave off that vibe, appearing to throw teammates under the bus. Greg McElroy had some strong words about it. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/02/greg_mcelroy_says_cam_newton_q.html "What I have issues with is the way he did not jump on the fumble after he dropped the ball -- and I know he was getting beat up all game -- but he jumped away from the ball when the ball's on the ground. I have never not one time in my life seen a player do that, especially a quarterback. And you know what? His teammates will look at him a little different after that, especially his teammates on the defensive side of the football." "You can say what you want. The postgame press conference didn't bother me -- it really didn't -- because I think the media has a certain level of self-importance, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl. But I have big issues with the way he did not jump on the football." "...It has everything to do with the fact that I think he quit on his team, and it was most evident by the way he did not jump on the football." Edited February 9, 2016 by FireChan
