Why the !@#$ do they need police escorts? They're just driving down the freeway?

Why the !@#$ do they need police escorts? They're just driving down the freeway? When I was on the drumline for the Seahawks in 2005, we met up at the stadium to get on buses to the airport to fly to Detroit for SB XL. We had a police escort and we were still in Seattle.
