Edelman did nothing the first half of his career and they signed him to a cheap deal and he only emerged when Welker left

it's not about discounts or backroom deals, it's about a team that manages itself better than most

Part of the "manages itself better than most" appears to be signing some incredibly talented players for (relatively speaking) peanuts.

I guess you could say "nothing the first half of his career" for definitions of nothing that include being a pretty stout kick and punt returner, but the story is more complicated than "they signed him to a cheap deal". He showed flashes at times. He also did anything they asked of him, including playing both sides of the ball. In 2013, he signed a 1-yr deal and had >100 receptions for >1000 yds. Now for other players and other teams, you would think that, added to his previous flashes, would draw some interest as a FA. But no, he resigned with the Pats for a very modest 4 year deal. Maybe it was his injury history. Maybe other teams just figure any old WR looks good with Brady throwing to him?

Look at what they got those guys playing for. Gronkowski...Vollmer....Edelman...Chandler Jones....The string of F bombs I loosed made the dog bark at me. Incentivized roster bonuses, the works. I mean, they're paying Gronk $250k more than Scott Chandler this year. WTF?

Gronk is on a 6 year $54m deal. if you are looking at single year salaries, you dont understand working the salary cap

gronks cap hit this year is something close to double chandlers entire two year contract value.

go to sportrac.com and look at their contract details

Gronk is still on his rookie deal, and is due to make much more over the next few years

Gronk is not on a rookie deal.

He signed a $54M deal two years ago that was heavily back-loaded.

The only guy that's taking a hometown discount is Brady, and it wouldn't shock me at all if they had some kind of wink-nod agreement to compensate him further after he retires.

The reason that they're in good cap shape is that they don't have a very good team overall--they have Brady and a few other solid guys like Gronk and their OTs on offense and Chandler Jones on defense (who's still on his rookie deal).

yup. they got edelman cheap because they signed him cheap and then created the monster he has become after the fact. its like if we wouldve been able to hold on to peters on that original RT contract.... as you mention, jones is on a rookie deal and gronk is getting paid top notch for tight ends. really not a great rant thread.

For another thread, I looked up Vollmer's salary cap. That led me to look at the Pats salary cap picture.

I promptly vomited my breakfast blueberries all over my keyboard and had to rinse my mouth out with coffee.

This is the true meaning of "hometown discount". When your team are perennial playoff and Superbowl contenders year after year after year, guys want to stay and keep the team together and they'll take less than the open market would probably give them.

It's Catch 22. When you're a perennial loser, you got to pay high to attract FA and you got to pay high to keep your guys, which means it's hard to put quality and depth all across the roster, the quality and depth you need to become a winner.

Very misleading statement. In 2012, Gronk signed a $54m dea for 6 yrs. His guaranteed money is $19.1m spread over the term of the contract. The Patriots have a $10m option on him for 2016 (which they'll exercise). Chandler's deal last year was $4.75m for 2 years and $2m guaranteed. Hardly comparable when you look at the bigger picture. Sure, base salaries are within $250K of each other, but that's not the only aspect of their compensation. Their cap number right now isn't much better than Buffalo's. They're at $149.2m and have some deals to get done.

When is Edelman up? You would think he will be pretty cut-throat in getting paid.

That I can answer easily. He's under contract for 2016 and 2017. His deal in 2014 was a 4 year $17m deal with $6m guaranteed. His base is $2.5m in 2016 with $750K available in roster bonus and $250Kin workout bonus. For 2017, it's $3m base + $750K roster. I imagine if he has another good year in 2016 that he'll be looking for a new contract then.

So his cap number is $4.4m for 2016 and $5.25m for 2017. Not huge, but not potatoes either.

I think some teams will throw money at him, but you gotta wonder If the guy has much value without Brady. It's not like Deion Branch set the world on fire when he left NE for greener pastures.

I would not be the least bit surprised if the patriots* end up getting caught for some sort of salary cap cheating in the future. Just a hunch.

Well like SF it is worth it.

Looks like you're all caught up, my friend. Boston is an awesome place to be, and their sports franchises are well run, professional and successful. It all works together. WNY and the Bills have been pretty much the opposite for the past 20 years, but hopefully Pegs will continue to throw $$ at it until it becomes Green Bay. Is what it is. The NFL is a big boys league. WNY is minor league. Thank goodness for RW and Pegs , or this franchise would have been gone long long ago....

The book on SpyGate addressed all of this.

Bottom line, these guys (including the coaches) all know what will happen to their careers when they leave NE for a level playing field. THAT's what keeps them in the fold for less.
