Hammered a Lot Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Buddy "The Wonder" dog is getting up there in age but still is smart enough to spit out his Meds or can sniff out his ground up Meds when it's in peanut butter, stews, canned dog food. Anybody got any tricks that a dog has not thought of?
TakeYouToTasker Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 We use cut up chunks of hotdogs, and cut slits in them that we slide the meds into, then we get Sir all fired up to have "a treat". He swallows the small hotdog bits whole in his excitement.

Anybody got any tricks that a dog has not thought of? A product called "pill pockets" buy them online for best prices. Be careful not to touch pill on outside of treat or its useless. if the pills are large cut them in half use two. Sometimes we used a emptyi pill pocket first to trick her. For our doggies they work the best. used hot dog dogs & everything else. Once they figure it out they rejected it. Pill pockets our dogs will swallow whole they love them. if you want to just try them out before committing to a large quanity petco or your vet will gladly overcharge you for the test.
Beerball Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 You've tried wrapping them and then tossing them to Buddy? Mine used to swallow whatever was thrown without bothering to chew.
BringBackFergy Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 You've tried wrapping them and then tossing them to Buddy? Mine used to swallow whatever was thrown without bothering to chew. That would be a lab? (Speaking from experience with two right now).
Beerball Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 That would be a lab? (Speaking from experience with two right now). Yes, gugny variety. Actually golden retrievers and a chocolate lab.
Hammered a Lot Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Fold the meds on a buttered piece of bread. We tried all the other tricks except this one. My force feeding is ground up Meds in peanut butter than smear a little at a time on his teeth/gum area.
Hammered a Lot Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) We went to a pharmacy that does compounding. We had them make his med into a liquid form (peanut butter flavored) so we shoot it into his mouth. We'll see how long that lasts before he resists this treatment. I second this. It's the only thing that worked for my dog when she got very old.
eball Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I've never met a dog who wouldn't gobble something up in peanut butter so Buddy is obviously a tough cookie. Good luck with the liquid formulation.
Hammered a Lot Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 I've never met a dog who wouldn't gobble something up in peanut butter so Buddy is obviously a tough cookie. Good luck with the liquid formulation. Smart with a good nose Shepherd and Beagle First dose was easy. He did not know what was happening. Next couple he knew what was coming and it was a struggle but success. He is doing a diuretic which in pill form has a mint smell to it. Even ground up in peanut butter he could smell it.
Chef Jim Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Yes, gugny variety. Actually golden retrievers and a chocolate lab. Awwww how cute. I live in Oakland we prefer...........

Buddy has lost 2lbs of water weight and does not look like a harbor seal anymore.
