CardinalScotts
hard to believe Osborne wasn't fired for bringing so many criminals through Lincoln during his tenure.. but like a lot of win-at-all-costs coaches, he was rewarded - with a US congressional seat. just win baby.. ya there is Phillips and um um um um hmmm anyone got anyone else? DDD
He had his demons for sure but sad when someone takes their own life. I hope he is at peace with himself. He wasted his life. Probably should have been on death row anyway for murder, so this just saves taxpayer money. In 15 years, no one will remember his name. Where is your soul? 26CornerBlitz
If you remember this from last year: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25204117/lawrence-phillips-describes-terrifying-situation-in-letters-written-from-prison It's no surprise that it came to this ending. @AP_NFL Coroner: Imprisoned ex-NFL running back Phillips committed suicide: http://apne.ws/1WfSg8R
hondo in seattle
It's all about mental health. I did a Google. On ESPN I saw LP's last letter to his former coach. Very logical and in character with what many of us would say. At one moment he has documented murder actions, then another moment he comes across soundly. I hope the big brains at mental health can fix this. Yep. I really disliked the guy when he came out of college. But then I read a couple articles where he sounded like a good guy who occasionally does really dumb/bad things. He's more of a mental case than a criminal. BackInDaDay
ya there is Phillips and um um um um hmmm anyone got anyone else? yes, i do.. many came in a very short time frame that this old article describes.. http://www.si.com/vault/1995/09/25/206647/coach-and-jury-nebraska-players-charged-with-crimes-have-a-steadfast-ally-in-the-man-who-runs-the-program-tom-osborne the acceptance of criminal behavior among a disproportionate number of people involved with well financed university football programs, may have hit the breaking point at Penn State - but coaches like Osborne were abusing their influence in these relatively small college towns, for a very long time. Saxum
I called it: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14579822/lawrence-phillips-family-donate-brain-cte-research-attorney-says Chamberlain, who is representing Phillips' family and who represented him in a lawsuit brought by retired players against the NFL over concussions, told USA Today Sports that the family hopes a study of Phillips' brain will provide answers. They will claim Phillips was not an antisocial aggressive person but head injuries in NFL were cause of his issue. No one seems to blame college football, drugs, their own life styles, etc.

Thrivefourfive
I live in the area where he went to high school(s). A high school office secretary I know said he was always sitting in a chair outside the principal's office. With NFL size in HIGH SCHOOL, he kept bouncing around the area and wearing out his welcome. One school that couldn't handle him was a perennial national contender, Bishop Amat, known for elite future NFL running backs. This is just crazy that he had such a physical gift, but at the same time, the inability to utilize and profit from it and to keep himself out of trouble.
