Seriously, is Polian on drugs? Why would he say something that stupid?

Well, he certainly drafted a boatload of them while he was GM in Buffalo! RBs too. Two DBs per draft on average during his stay. Granted, some of them were later round picks, and the draft went to 12 rounds during his time here.

1986 None - Ronnie Harmon RB 1st, Cary Bryum RB 5th

1987 Nate Odomes DB 2nd, Roland Mitchell DB 2nd, Jamie Mueller RB 3rd, Kery Porter RB 7th

1988 Thurman 2nd, Ezekial Gadson DB 5th (I remember Zeke, never made the team, but he had a nice career at Pitt), Bo Wright RB 7th

1989 Michael Andrews DB 5th, Sean Doctor RB 6th, Brian Jordan DB 7th, Chris Hale DB 7th, Carlo Cheattom DB 10th

1990 James Williams DB 1st, Carwell Gardner FB 2nd, Eddie Fuller RB 4th

1991 Henry Jones DB 1st, Darryl Wren DB 3rd, Shawn Wilbourn DB 5th

1992 Matt Darby DB 5th, Kurt Schulz DB 7th, Leonard Humphries DB 8th

Because he's smart enough to know:

  1. DB performance is the most crucial piece of Rex's Defense
  2. Rex likes to use 3 Safeties on the field at once
  3. The Bills are already thin at Safety
  4. Just because Whitner was a bad choice, 10 years and 3 GMs ago, you dont ban picking a Safety early if you need one and there is a good one available

FWIW (which may not be that much), I've been approached by numerous friends this week who are fans of other teams but know of my passion for the Bills. To a man they have offered overwhelmingly positive thoughts on Rex hiring Rob to join his staff.

I found it interesting that outside of a Bills-infected environment, the opinions of other NFL fans is often surprising.

I love Bill Polian and Ralph's firing him was one of the worst mistakes in Buffalo Bills history.

Nevertheless, some of his comments do not make any sense - particularly that bit about an old, unathletic offensive line.

Me too.

Much of the time, it is the loudest people who carry on the crusades here and in the Buffalo media.

Although it would have been nice to have a better draft pick, one of the main reasons why I am so happy that we beat the Jets in the last game is so that the anti Rex crusaders could not spend the whole off season saying that the Jets went to the playoffs because Rex was no longer their coach (of course, forgetting to mention that they upgraded their defensive backs and QB etc.).

Were the persons you asked psych patients? ;)

i don't think they "forget" to mention it. They purposely only mention things that fit a certain narrative.

Here's my take on this: Rex wanted to replace Thurman but he's not going to change his defensive system, which is the core of his identity as an NFL coach. So the new guy has to totally understand and buy into his system. I saw Petine and Rob Ryan as the two most likely candidates, but Rob is his brother and I think there is some tension between Rex and Pettine after Pettine left NY and took a bunch of assistants with him. So Rob Ryan is the guy. The alternative would have been to keep Thurman and I'm willing to give Rob Ryan a shot over than honestly.

It depends on what happens prior to the draft. If the Bills re-sign McKelvin to a reduced deal and believe that Aaron Williams will be back then I don't think that secondary is the biggest thing. I would still be looking for a LB, OL or WR in the first round.

I don't think Thurman is the defensive coordinator in a way that we know most defensive coordinators operate. Rex is the defensive coordinator. Thurman helps him, but it's Rex's baby. Like Gailey was the offensive coordinator in spite of Curtis Modkins holding the actual title. Modkins knew Gailey's system and helped him, but the buck stopped with Gailey. That is why Pettine would never have been brought back. He wanted to be his own person so to speak. Rob being brought on is only because, no pun intended, he is a mirror of Rex. They run the same scheme. The positive about it is that they both have something to prove. Their family name is on the line. I have no doubt all stops will be pulled out. Hopefully, that gets the defensive result back to Rex's usual top results.

I'd like to see McKelvin back at a reduced rate, but they might find cutting him of more value and we can't count on Aaron Williams returning. I would say Polian isn't far off about DB, safety specifically, being a huge need for the Bills. Even if A.Will returns, Graham could be out and Rambo's strength isn't down in and down out coverage. Rex needs three safeties.

The Bills would be wise to curtail dumb habits that kept them out of the playoffs, wouldn't you say?

A few days back on the Mike And Mike show, they were talking about Chip Kelley and how when you give these guys all this power, there has to be someone in the organization who they will listen to when that person tells them you are wrong, or that's a terrible idea.

In that respect I think having Rob here may be good for Rex as I'm pretty certain he won't be afraid to tell Rex to stick it at any time.

Also think Rob understand the D that Rex wants to run better than anyone else on the staff so his presence will allow Rex to have more time to actually be the HC instead of having to hold Thurmans hand all the time.
