YoloinOhio Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Potentially big news developing on Megatron --> Dave Birkett, Lions beat writer for Detroit Free Press @davebirkett I've thought he & the Lions would work things out, but people who know him better than me think retirement possible Edited January 31, 2016 by YoloinOhio
Chandler#81 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Wow! He can't! We expect to trade for him this off-season!
YoloinOhio Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 Wow! He can't! We expect to trade for him this off-season!haha I immediately thought about that thread.
Chandler#81 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 IMO, he's the sole reason Matt Stafford is still in the League.
YoloinOhio Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 @ttwentyman Statement from Calvin Johnson: Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future." "I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future.
TheFunPolice Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 He's only 30! Barry Sanders now Megatron. Anytime someone complains about being a Bills fan remember the Browns and Lions.
K D Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 The Brett Favre "get out of training camp free" card is being played. Miraculously his desire will be renewed in mid August and he will be back in time for week 1
YoloinOhio Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) @mikegarafolo $12.5m non-guaranteed base salary next year. Might be lowered but still would walk away from a lot of coin. @MikeGarafolo Actually, $15.95m. This past season was $12.5m. @ttwentyman Statement from Lions: We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision (cont) ...to give proper thought and consideration to his football future. 24mill cap hit for lions next year @rand_getlin Was told prior to the season that Calvin Johnson was considering retiring this year or next. peterpan Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 He would be just freaking awesome next to Sammy. Don't retire CJ come to buffalo instead!!!!
dpberr Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Ever since Borland/Willis, I'm convinced that players on their own time and money are getting checked for CTE. Is it coincidence that UCLA discovered an approach to test for it in a living body in 2013?
Charles Romes Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Megatron is weighing the difference between having a net worth of $50M and sure health for the next 60 years of life and potentially $60M net worth. For these giant contract guys early retirement makes sense. Kind of surprised we haven't seen one of the top QBs bail out of the game early. Edited January 6, 2016 by Charles Romes
Canadian Bills Fan Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Does retiring get you out of your contract? Could he retire and then unretire and be a free agent? CBF
26CornerBlitz Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Does retiring get you out of your contract? COuld he retire and then unretire and be a free agent? CBF Nope.
KD in CA Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 He's grossed over $100MM in an era where the stock market has soared. If he's been smart with his money, his family is set for generations. I'd quit at 30 too.
YoloinOhio Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 @espnstatsinfo Calvin Johnsons cap value 2019 $18.3M 2018 $17.0M 2017 $21.4M 2016 $24.1M All are most among WR Source: Roster Management System
BarleyNY Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Megatron has a $16M salary and a $24M cap hit in 2016. There's been a ton of talk about his deal being restructured to lower that which makes me wonder if this is about him wanting out of Detroit as a free agent. Or maybe he's just giving an early indication that he won't be taking a pay cut.
metzelaars_lives Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 IMO, he's the sole reason Matt Stafford is still in the League. Hyperbole alert.
Buftex Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I will be shocked if he retires...shocked I tell you!
papazoid Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 $12.9 mil in DEAD MONEY for 2016 Detroit saves $11.1 mil of his $24 mil cap hit
C.Biscuit97 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 One of my favorite players and I love watching him play. But seems like a really good dude and can't blame a guy for getting out early before an injury decides it for him.
