JM57
Not really, our run D was terrible. That's a direct result of having a 4-3 WLB who is better in coverage than against the run playing MLB. The run D would have been awful under Schwartz too if Alonso was the MLB. I specifically remember Pettine mentioning they wanted to play Alonso at WLB but couldn't because they had no one else to play MLB.
PromoTheRobot
Ryan is the DC.....it's his defense and he makes all the calls. Thurman is DC in name only.Probably why he sounded like he had no clue with Ty Dunne.

So, the run D was bad because you're saying 1 player was out of position? It was a lot more than that. Pettine D was all about rushing the QB....His Browns are terrible against the run also..... BADOLBILZ
So, the run D was bad because you're saying 1 player was out of position? It was a lot more than that. Pettine D was all about rushing the QB....His Browns are terrible against the run also..... The run D was bad because they had ONE decent linebacker on the team. Fortunately he was able to play every snap but there were times when he was charged with covering 3 or 4 gaps in run D. In all fairness to Pettine.......there was nobody else to put out there. You want Hughes or Lawson inside? Bradham was putrid at the time. The personnel dictated the scheme and he did the best he could with it. The indisputable fact of the NFL is that it is a passing league.........and therefore minimizing the impact of passing games is job #1 for a DC..........which is WHY he got a head coaching job after that season. The people whining about the run defense under Pettine and Schwartz are lost in time wrt NFL strategy. The Bills ran for 480 yards the past two weeks..........and were 1-1......convincingly beaten in one game and narrowly maintaining a 9-6 lead for 58 minutes in the other. Running and stopping the run doesn't win games any longer. Edited January 2, 2016 by #BADOL

boyst
there is no direct thread addressing if we should bring him back. but, i would consider it. he needed help stopping the run, though. Edited January 3, 2016 by Boyst62
Charles Romes
Even if we get gashed with the run we would be better just by not have 10 pre snap penalties and game and the players understanding what to do.
John from Riverside
I am a big fan of it because Pettine was able to do it with the personel we have now and not have to make another scheme change.......
K D
Pettine will want to go out on his own. Doesn't want to be in Rex's shadow
KollegeStudnet
It's tempting. Pettine was appreciated here and appreciated his opportunity. I say, he could kick the tires.

Hapless Bills Fan
Why not would be Pettine probably doesn't want to be a DC With all the HC vacancies already and the Browns being such a wet mess, he may well be given another chance If he isn't, if I'm Pettine I want to try for a DC gig under a HC known as an offensive specialist, so anything I can achieve will be credited to me and build my rep for another HC try. If I go back to work for Rex, I'll be seen as his shadow again, not as the real mastermind of the D.
Utah John
Pettine was seduced by the chance to be an NFL head coach. Only problem, while the Browns are technically an NFL team, their front office is bush league. Pettine never stood a chance. I am not sure Pettine is HC material, but he's a great DC. He worked for Wrecks in New Jersey and seemed to get along OK,. though he did come here to get out from under the shadow. He might be willing to come in and return to DC. The biggest problem will be getting his boss from getting in the way of the repairs Pettine will need to do.

Buffalo Barbarian
I'm not convinced going backwards is the way forward. it is when he ran this defense and he ran it better than Rex, if he does come back I hope he can shore up the run D like he did the pass rush.
