3rdand12 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 @RapSheet The #Bills look at the improvements GM Doug Whaley has made in his tenure & Rex Ryan works well with him. The Pegulas are fans, too. Discussed #Bills GM situation on @NFLGameDay: I'm told Doug Whaley is on very solid ground. Better chance he gets an extension than fired. So why oh why do these things come out? Just to increase discontent amongst the masses ? i can find no other reason at this point. worser still Fans have actually bought into this garbage again, Fire everyone!! Have Pegules fire himself even. can we still fire Ralph? Since Brandon & Whaley both like spending money and resources on shiny new toys like Sammy & Shady, Pegs might as well make this guy czar: a dead golfer?
Augie Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Payne Stewart had the outfits, but I don't think he's our guy!
Rico Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I don't know what Payne Stewart looked like, is there a resemblance?

26CornerBlitz Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 Bill Polian sees no formal role in his future with the Bills Bill Polian tells Buffalobills.com's John Murphy that he has no interest in any kind of formal role with the Buffalo Bills organization.
Wayne Cubed Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Bill Polian sees no formal role in his future with the Bills In the article it says he can't consult because of his obligations to ESPN. So, he doesn't want to be a Czar and can't consult with the Bills. Seems like a bit of a publicity stunt to make those comments about the Bills then.
jahnyc Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I think he may have wanted to consult, but going public the way he did with his interest and comments about the team may have soured the Pegulas and any interest they may have had in bringing him in. Just a guess.

Hapless Bills Fan Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I think he may have wanted to consult, but going public the way he did with his interest and comments about the team may have soured the Pegulas and any interest they may have had in bringing him in. Just a guess. Or, Polian thought he could consult with the Bills as long as he didn't accept any sort of permanent role with the team, and his current employer's lawyer rang him up to say "may I direct your attention to Paragraph 19 Clause 3 here, which we interpret to include consulting"? Or his ego got all butt-hurt because the local media said "wait, his points don't make sense, don't do it Terry don't Jump" instead of "all hail the brilliant maestro and savior!"
NoSaint Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 in the interview last night, he backtracked a little and explained why/how he made the comments. Worth a listen. Good spot to simply share some insight for those that won't have a chance for a bit
26CornerBlitz Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 in the interview last night, he backtracked a little and explained why/how he made the comments. Worth a listen. Agreed. He walked some of it back and attributed some of the misunderstanding to Carucci's misinterpretation. Polian also said that the aging and unathletic OL commentary came from a caller into his radio show.
dpberr Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I don't know what the "czar" role accomplishes. This isn't a game anymore for football elders like Polian. I am wary of asking for guidance from guys who had success in an NFL that no longer exists. You need a sharp person who understands the complexity of football in this era with free agency, salary cap, the intricacies of the CBA, need to win immediately, and the changing strategies on the field. The GM game is increasingly a younger man's game. E.g. Howie Roseman, Dave Caldwell, Whaley, Ryan Pace, John Schneider.
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Polien also got out of Buffalo before the big push in free agency started. Instead he left that mess to John Butler, who never met a player he didn't love and over-paid for many. Granted it kept the team strong through the late 90's, but then the bottom fell out fast. I agree with the characterization that the game is likely to have passed Polian by. The number of successful GMs and coaches coming in after time off and time spent in the broadcast game is pretty low. You have to be highly adaptable to understand and anticipate trends in the league. I still feel like Polian had very good fortune in having Kelly, the quite underrated Kerry Collins, and Manning to work with. Having the most important position in the game set for you is huge. And yet, his teams only took home one Super Bowl ring. His Bills teams were one of the last great pre-free agency squads, and once it hit, it slowly took a toll on them. They survived because of Kelly /Thomas/Reed/Bruce and a rebuilt defense, but he was never able to get an elite D and elite offense at the same time. His drafts in the 90s were pretty damn bad. He never hit on an heir apparent QB at any of his stops. I actually think that the job he did with Carolina was his finest work. Getting a team off the ground that quickly is impressive. The perspectives he shares in this article amount to throwing darts. Some hit, some do not. He has had a great career, but I would rather look forward.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 All that being said IF which is huge i will admit . IF they would have stayed the course with Chan & left Fitz at QB could the team been the Jets of this year ? I for sure know that the team would have gotten something for all the dead money they had to give Fitz !! You're right that the team would have gotten a couple years of improved QB play vs what we got from EJ/Tuel/Lewis when Kolb met Bathmat then Kolb met Meatball, or from Orton. I don't think we would have ever seen the quality of play out of Fitz that he showed in Texas and for the Jets this year. I think Fitz needed the double-helping of humility of first, getting cut by the team that gave him his big chance and big contract, then getting benched by O'Brien and probably some other insight about what a winning QB has to actually do to develop himself there (what exactly were the insights he got may be open to question). I don't think he's just making nice when he says "I"m a different QB now" and credits O'Brien. But we'll see on Sunday. PS I was accused of "man porn" when I made these comments a few years ago, but when he was here, Fitz just didn't have the arm and shoulder physique of a top NFL QB. He had a dad bod. He looked like someone you'd meet at Kmart or Planet Fitness. And with all that talk about lower body and feet, bottom line Fitz had to put all his body into his throws to sling it more than 10 yards. Now his upper body looks a little more like an NFL QB. This may have some bearing on improved completions, interceptions, and YPA.
YoloinOhio Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Would Amy Trask be a good "czar" candidate? Yes, very smart
