buffalonian Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 The question was posed today in a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer. http://mobile.philly.com/sports/eagles/?wss=/philly/sports/eagles&id=363323361 He has had a rough season playing inside and has not lived up to Philly's expectations. I find the column interesting when juxtaposed with McCoy's selection to the pro bowl yesterday.
nucci Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He is a bit overrated here...had a great 1st half to his rookie season..injuries plus he is too small to play ILB.....
buffalonian Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 I also found it interesting that folks are questioning Alonso's ability to handle a complicated defensive scheme. He strikes me as a rather instinctual player. I imagine that he would have struggled in the Bills defensive scheme this year. This begs the question; are defensive coordinators over thinking things?
YoloinOhio Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He really has been bad. Philly media sounds like they are hoping he isn't fully healthy.
dpberr Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) Another player where his talents have been neutered by the "elaborate" scheme. In Philadelphia, they require more than the "See ball, get ball" that he did well here in Buffalo. We all know you can't be "just" a good football player anymore. You have to be adaptable to this scheme or that one and be intelligent enough to learn responsibilities in it, not specific plays. This may generate criticism, but IMO, Alonso is a fantastic football player but he's not the most astute student of the game. He will be lost in a complicated playbook. I think that's what has happened in Philadelphia. Edited December 23, 2015 by dpberr

nucci Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Would you like me to pick from Eagles games this year? Watch the Tampa game where they ran for almost 300 yds. Works both ways
DC Greg Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Would you like me to pick from Eagles games this year? Watch the Tampa game where they ran for almost 300 yds. Works both ways Yeah he is not the best against the run, and that was apparent during his time here as well. He's an ideal Will. Great in pass coverage and a playmaker. But you can't coach that kind of ability. He missed. Ha! Hard to change direction in mid air when the running back moves to the side. Incredible athleticism and ability.
DriveFor1Outta5 Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He is a bit overrated here...had a great 1st half to his rookie season..injuries plus he is too small to play ILB..... That seems to be case around here quite often. We always think we have loads of talent, but when our players go to other teams they tend to fade away.
BillsFan130 Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He is a bit overrated here...had a great 1st half to his rookie season..injuries plus he is too small to play ILB..... Yep, perfectly said

I think that's what has happened in Philadelphia. A defensive playbook? It's been widely reported that Chip Kelly is very "hands off" when it comes to defense. Basically let's the DC do his thing and stays out of his way. And I don't remember hearing anything about Billy Davis using any kind of complicated scheme. Don't they use 3-4? Kiko was actually playing pretty well before his injury. Wouldn't be surprised to find out he's been playing through some pain after returning from injury too early. I remember reading some talk on the Eagles message board a couple of weeks ago about him possibly needing surgery after the season. Don't know if that was rumors or just fan speculation. Big Turk Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He is a bit overrated here...had a great 1st half to his rookie season..injuries plus he is too small to play ILB..... How is a guy who weighs 242 lbs "small", lol
klos63 Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 How is a guy who weighs 242 lbs "small", lol maybe 'not strong enough' would be a better way to describe him, but just looking at him, he appears 'small' for his listed size. Yeah he is not the best against the run, and that was apparent during his time here as well. He's an ideal Will. Great in pass coverage and a playmaker. But you can't coach that kind of ability. Ha! Hard to change direction in mid air when the running back moves to the side. Incredible athleticism and ability. he would still be expected to tackle and handle blockers - he's not good at that wherever he lines up.
truth on hold Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) I think he looked slow after coming back from injury. That end-zone pick he made pre-injury was about as athletic as an LB can be. Still even post-injury I think he starts on our LB-talent starved roster. Edited December 23, 2015 by JTSP
Formerly Allan in MD Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Serious injuries can ruin a promising career.
Maury Ballstein Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 He missed. Fantastic. No ill will for Kiko personally but he's been an absolute trash can for the Eagles.
Boolay Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) The NFC east realizes that you run right at Kiko cause he won't be there as he will be taking a gap and if he is isn't taking a gap he is too small to take on the blocker. Edited December 23, 2015 by Boolay
Manther Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 Solid trade for us. Especially with Kiko's question on recovery from injury.
