"CONFEDERATE" Explorer ?

CANCELING MAGELLAN

Ferdinand Magellan was one of the world’s greatest explorers. He led the first expedition to sail around the world, although he didn’t finish the voyage, having been murdered by natives in what is now the Philippines. Magellan’s greatness as an explorer and navigator has been recognized in many ways. For example, he discovered the Strait of Magellan at the bottom of South America. And his expedition observed and recorded the galaxies that now bear his name.

But perhaps not for long: Astronomers request retitling of galaxies named after ‘violent colonialist’ explorer Magellan.

A group of astronomers has called for galaxies named after the 16th-century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to be renamed because of his “violent colonialist legacy”.

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way that can be visible to the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere.

They are claimed to have been discovered by Magellan and his crew during their first circumnavigation of the world between 1519 and 1522.

However, a group of astronomers in the United States has asked the International Astronomical Union, the body in charge of naming astronomical objects, for the Magellanic Clouds to be renamed.

So, what exactly did Magellan do wrong?

You were warned.

CANCEL GEORGE WASHINGTON?

When liberals began their war on public monuments a few years ago, we were told that only statues of Confederate generals would be dismantled. Of course that turned out not to be true. While slavery is the purported justification for these erasures of history, even monuments to Abraham Lincoln have not been immune.

Now, New York City–having, apparently, no larger issues to address–is considering tearing down statutes of George Washington, Christopher Columbus and Thomas Jefferson. Washington is on the list because he owned slaves; never mind that he was one of the few planters who freed his slaves.

This prompted Rasmussen Reports to sample Americans’ opinions on monuments to Washington:

Twenty-seven percent (27%) of U.S. voters approve of removing public monuments to Washington, including 11% who Strongly Approve. However, two-thirds (66%) disapprove of removing monuments to Washington, including 48% who Strongly Disapprove.

I should hope so! On the other hand, there is this:

Democratic voters, however, are more evenly divided; 40% of Democrats approve of removing monuments to Washington – including 21% who Strongly Approve – while 53% disapprove, including 32% who Strongly Disapprove.

Forty percent of Democrats want to tear down statutes of George Washington. And that figure is higher among younger Democrats:

[J]ust 31% of voters under 40 have a Very Favorable impression of Washington. Forty-four percent (44%) of under-40 voters at least somewhat approve of removing monuments to America’s first president….

This reflects the poisonous doctrines taught in America’s schools. As the schools turn out more misinformed young people, watch for the number who want to erase George Washington from our history to grow. Of course, to truly erase the Father of our Country we would have no re-name Washington, D.C. and the State of Washington, among many other things.

And finally, this:

Twenty-two percent (22%) of all Likely Voters believe Joe Biden is a better president than Washington, but a majority (52%) say Biden is worse than Washington.

Who could possibly be crazy enough to think that Joe Biden is a better president than George Washington?

Biden Removing Monument that Celebrates National Reconciliation

DAVID STROM

Arlington National Cemetary is hallowed ground.

Its history is tied to both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War–the Arlington Estate was originally created as a tribute to George Washington by his adopted grandson, and by an odd quirk of fate, Robert E. Lee wound up temporarily possessing the property at the outbreak of the Civil War. The federal government seized it for military purposes, and it became the site of our most prestigious national cemetery.

The Civil War was, by far, the most deadly war in our history, with over half a million American deaths. At the turn of the 20th century, Congress agreed to intern Confederate soldiers at Arlington and allowed the erection of a monument that became known as the “Reconciliation” monument–a celebration of the country coming back together.

After the George Floyd riots, the federal government decided to take down monuments with a connection to the Confederacy and to eliminate anything that could be interpreted as celebrating, justifying, or acknowledging the Confederacy as anything other than evil. As part of this effort the “Reconciliation Monument” was put on the chopping bloc.

FTA:

The history and composition of the statue bear out Clyde's assertion of unity.

Traditionally a cemetery for Union soldiers, in 1898 after victory in the Spanish-American War, President William McKinley declared, 'in the spirit of fraternity we should share with you in the care of the graves of Confederate soldiers ... Sectional feeling no longer holds back the love we feel for each other.' Over the ensuing years, many Confederate graves were moved to Arlington National Cemetery, and the monument, designed by the first Jewish graduate of Virginia Military Institute, was unveiled in 1914.

The monument itself shows a female figure on top representing the beating of swords into plowshares, the reliefs around the body of the monument depict freed slaves, and Union and Confederate figures in harmony, and even the base of the statue contains an excerpt from the Pharsalia, a poem written by Roman poet Lucan after the war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, decrying the horrors of civil war.

But in post-George Floyd America, none of that history means anything. Anything remotely associated with the Confederacy has to go.

BTW.  The women of the confederacy were involved in reconstruction. In one very famous story they petitioned the government to pay John W Jones 2 dollars and 50 cents for every Confederate soldier that died in Hellmira prison camp.  making him the richest black person in the state.  And in turn Designated Woodlawn Cemetery with the same designation and has a similar monument.
