Mark Vader Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 The month of December brings us the end of the Holiday Season of movies, and it will end the year of 2015 with a big bang. As one movie prepares to make box office history, there will be lots of other films gathering attention for the Oscar statue. There will be plenty of different fare to be had this month to satisfy everyone's needs. However it will be difficult to beat out the hype of the one movie that will take us back to a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Three years ago, Disney shook the entertainment world with the news that they had acquired Lucasfilm for a mere 4 billion dollars. Immediately at the press conference when they made the initial announcement, they stated that the Star Wars franchise would continue with it's original story line and other separate stories as well. It has been 10 years since "Revenge of the Sith" was released, leaving many fans wondering what would become of the beloved Star Wars franchise, as George Lucas had stated that he would not be making any more films from the universe he created. Now, here we are, 32 years after "Return of the Jedi" was released, Disney and Lucasfilm continue the story with, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". To put it simply, this story takes place 30 years after "Jedi". Any other plot details remain a mystery. Needless to say, this is the movie all Star Wars fans have really been waiting for. Directed by J.J. Abrams, and starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Lupita Nyongo, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Issac, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis & Max von Sydow. Ron Howard directs and Chris Hemsworth stars in, "In the Heart of the Sea". Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. Also starring Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson & Ben Whishaw. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling & Brad Pitt star in, "The Big Short". Four outsiders in the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s decide to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed. Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro & Bradley Cooper star in, "Joy". Joy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty. Directed by David O. Russell. Will Smith stars in, "Concussion". In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play. Also starring Gugu Mbatha-Rawe, Alec Baldwin & Luke Wilson. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg star in "Daddy's Home". A mild-mannered radio executive strives to become the best stepdad to his wife's two children, but complications ensue when their freewheeling and freeloading real father arrives, forcing him to compete for the affection of the kids. Also starring Linda Cardellini. Amy Poehler & Tina Fey are, "Sisters". Two sisters decide to throw one last house party before their parents sell their family home. In "Krampus", A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a Christmas demon to his family home. Starring Adam Scott & Toni Collette. In "Point Break", A young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. Starring Teresa Palmer & Luke Bracey. Finally in "Alvin an the Chipmunks: The Road Chip", Through a series of misunderstandings, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in Miami...and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave but possibly from gaining a terrible stepbrother. Starring Kaley Cuoco, Anna Faris, Bella Thorne & Christina Applegate. DC Tom Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Based on the trailer for Concussion, I want to see it just for Will Smith's performance, which looks absolutely phenomenal.
Dante Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 "In the heart of the sea" looks good. The previews for "The Revenant " look amazing but I don't see it listed Mark.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 The Big Short was Michael Lewis's best book, IMO. I bet this movie will be awesome. Also, Joy should be awesome, simply because it is the same group that did Silver linings playbook (one of my favorite movies).
Mark Vader Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) "In the heart of the sea" looks good. The previews for "The Revenant " look amazing but I don't see it listed Mark. I didn't list it because it opens nationwide in January. So I was going to add that to the Independent list, which I have been slacking on. Sorry about that. But thank you for posting the preview. It does look good. Interesting project for director Innaritu. You probably noticed that I did not post Quentin Tarantino's "Hateful Eight" movie either. Again because that will be in limited release this month. I will get to them. Edited December 10, 2015 by Mark Vader
CowgirlsFan Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Is "The Letters" an example of an independent movie?

Your lists are always pretty complete. Read this the other day on the movie http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3346383/Savagely-mauled-female-grizzly-Hugh-Glass-trekked-200-miles-broken-leg-exposed-ribs-maggots-ate-flesh-True-story-frontiersman-inspired-new-Leonardo-DiCaprio-movie.html

dpberr Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 As someone who's watched Alias, Lost and the Star Trek movies, you'll be impressed with the opening scene and the first 1/2 of Star Wars and the ending will be terrible. Abrams is a strong starter but a weak closer when it comes to plot.
The Avenger Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The Big Short was Michael Lewis's best book, IMO. I bet this movie will be awesome. Also, Joy should be awesome, simply because it is the same group that did Silver linings playbook (one of my favorite movies). Agreed about the Big Short, although I really liked Flash Boys as well. I find Lewis is remarkable in his ability to get average folks to understand how some of these very complex financial instruments were structured and functioned. I worked in the asset backed securities market before the collapse and I recommend Lewis' book to everyone who wants to understand what happened. I'm hoping the movie will be good - I see Carell and Bales got Golden Globe nods as well as a nomination as best picture, musical or comedy (still not quite sure how they categorize these)...

Even then, he only covered about half the complexity of the 2008 crash. I have a hard time believing the movie will be any good, since they'll no doubt simplify it even further. But Liar's Poker is still his best book.

Agreed about Lewis. i would say the same about "barbarians at the gate." Tremendous financial book about RJR Nabisco's LBO, but super accessible to lay persons.
KD in CA Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Based on the trailer for Concussion, I want to see it just for Will Smith's performance, which looks absolutely phenomenal. I just watched this....pretty good though it got a little overdone at parts in the second half of the movie. Smith is well deserving of any Best Actor nominations that come his way.
Jauronimo Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Even then, he only covered about half the complexity of the 2008 crash. I have a hard time believing the movie will be any good, since they'll no doubt simplify it even further. But Liar's Poker is still his best book. My expectations for the movie were about as low as could be but I enjoyed the film even if the movie told about a quarter of the book which covered about half the real story. The movie pinned the blame solely on Wall Street which disappointed me. Other than that, I thought the director did a pretty decent job with CDO the movie.
Maury Ballstein Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Hateful 8 was meh. Not tarantinos best work at all.
Maury Ballstein Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Big short is amazing. Loving it so far. I think that social network movie that sucked that everyone liked was trying to pull off what this movies pulling off.
