yesterday was the first episode I saw - a friend from out of town forced me to watch it and filled me in as we went (thank god for digital TV and being able to pause programs).

I am hooked, but is there a resource that would enable me to catch-up on all the characters, back-stories, theories, etc.

My friend's theory was that there was a nuclear disaster on the island - which explains the presence of the other people on the island and their need to steal babies (because the can not reproduce). She admitted that is was a stupid theory. Also, there is some kind of "monster" on the island, which she surmised was a mutation caused by the disaster.

No offense to your friend, but that really is a pretty stupid theory.

If you want some back info on the series, and have a lot of time, do a search on this board for all the treads about the show. We have some pretty in-depth discussions following each episode.

Another great episode last night!  The fastest hour on television (63 minutes actually).  :)

It seems to me this show has an excessive commercial time to show time ratio which really makes the show drag. I remember once hearing the average is around 23:30 show per 30 minutes for the average 1/2 hour show. I don't think last night had 47 min of show time for 1 hour show (let alone 63 min show).

You are the perfect candidate for TiVo, then. What I do is just pause it for the first 15-20 minutes, then start watching. I can then FF through all the commercials.

personally i am still clueless. question though, has the bear/boar & locke ever been seen in the same scene? is locke a manifestation of the animals? i mean after sawyer woke up and said the boar was there and ate all the food, all of a sudden there is locke eating something. also, the kid was interested in polar bears, voila a polar bear. that chick with sawyer seems to be some kind of expert on boars, voila a boar. I am Lost!

Kate is not an expert on boars, and yes, the Polar Bear has been seen in the same scene with Locke. Remember when they save the kids from the bear, trapped inside the tree?

she certainly knew alot about them when talking to sawyer when he was ready to go out hunting it.

It's been mentioned in previous episodes that she's somewhat of an expert outdoorsman. Knows how to track animals, etc.

The drinking game sequence was probably the most nearly original take on the lots-of-info-divulged-rapidly milieu that many other shows fail in. And this where everyone is seeking info.

Sawyer's back story was intriguing and I really see him in a different light. What was a little unclear was, who killed his mother? His father? who then shot himself on the bed. And if so, why was he going after the supposed Sawyer guy? That it ended up that he was esentially a hitman on some schmoe who didn't repay a loan, that was pretty cold (the actor who was sitting in the chair in the dark was the advanced Terminator in T2). Saywer wasn't a killer... Since being on the island, he shot the polar bear, shot the Air Marshal in mercy killing (but missed -- significance?) and now didn't have it to shoot the boar.

Locke's story was an intriguing moment too. He puts things out there such that you don't even know if he believes what he says half the time. The dog wasn't his sister, but there's likely some element of him that wanted to believe this, but simply dismisses it.

There's some things I've read elsewhere where I think it may be wrong-headed to be trying to figure out who is "controlling" the island. There are weird things, yeah, like Stephen King. It just is, and they have to survive in the face of them....

BTW, anyone catch that next week's is, in conjunction w/ the show title, "Lost in Translation"

another reason i believe they are in a parallel dimension. Did you see her walk away with Charlie? Her ass was tiny. She's supposed to be 9 months pregnant and her ass was perfect. Perhaps Locke is controlling that as well? I don't know - crazy theory...

Hurley appears as chubby as when they crashed. You'd think he'd be losing some weight. From the first episode, I thought to myself that it would be interesting to see how they handle that.

Producers said that this show was not going to take on a Castaway feel. That all the survivors would somehow find food, so seeing them waste away is not an option.

The reason that Sawyers dad killed his mother is because he found out that she had cheated on him with "Frank Sawyer," and that "Frank Sawyer" had bilked him out of all of his money. And after killing the mother, he sat on the kids bed and shot himself. "Frank Sawyer" was who our Sawyer thought he was killing.

The thing about Locke's story was supposed to be a parallel to Sawyer having lost someone close to him. At first I thought it was going to be his mother, but after he heard the voices, and then last words of the guy he killed, I believe the boar represented the guilt he was carrying for killing an innocent man. The fact that he couldn't shoot the boar represented his making the right decision as opposed to the wrong decision (shooting someone) earlier. Interesting that Jack's father "inspired" him to actually do the shooting.

"Old dude Sawyer" was the guy who grifted and romanced Sawyer's mother. When the Sawyer's father found out he went mental and killed his wife (Sawyer's mom) then himself.

Short of stapleing his stomach, that actor is never going to be even in the same ballpark as the word "thin"...

Thanks, I missed the first few minutes (they do start it earlier than 8) and had a few coughing-up-a-lung spells in getting over the flu.

That sense of "community" that some people were saying is lacking on the island is plainly obvious in Locke's story. He might not know the particular's of Sawyer's life, but it is pretty textbook of an abusive father. There's a lot of other types of communication that goes on, especially for Locke, but it may be a Sherlock Holmes kind of Knowing things. It seems magical that he might know about this something until you find out his ordinary reasoning.

Let's face it, Jack's father isn't the best of men. Which leads to another thing he said. Jack as the Good/Great Man. Who's going to emerge as his nemesis (you can't have a great man w/o a contrasting evil one)? Initially, I thought it was going to be Sawyer. And now I'm not at all sure. Call me crazy but it may actually be Boone with Locke as a medium. Trying to fit this all in to the Lord of the Flies-type reading I've been kicking around....

One'll get you ten that when they get to Hurley's backstory in a few weeks, with the clues there and what's been in the show, he had won the lottery.
