The Stanley cup predates the NHL. It was meant for the best hockey team in North America. The NHL adopted it as its trophy later. Since the 2005 AHL champ will represent the best team in North America, why not award the Stanley Cup to that team, along with the AHL Calder Cup? At least that avoids breaking the string.

I was just having this same conversation with some of my roommates. The whole point of the Stanley Cup was to reward the BEST team in hockey that year. Well, with the NHL not being around, the best team should be in the AHL. I say the AHL team that wins the championship gets the Cup.

...there are folks in the WHL who would take issue with that.

The Calder Cup is, in its own right, a prestigious hockey prize.  Let Lord Stanley's mug gather dust for a year.

The WHL is not even a pro league, it's a junior league. The AHL is the AAA level of hockey. All other leagues in North America are below it. Thanks, Malta. Glad to see others have the same line of thinking.

The best team in North America may have been Canada's team that won the World Championship. And I don't think the Stanley Cup was restricted to the best professional team. The Montreal AAA were the first champs, and AAA stood for Amateur Athletic Association.

Almost word for word. I wonder if it was someone who read your thread here.

There is little doubt that from the NHL's perspective the AHL is AAA. It is their chosen farm system. It is not necessarily the best 2nd tier hockey in North America. It surely might be on any given week, depending on how the prospects develop and who might be sent down for rehab etc.

It is exactly this kind of thinking that spelled the DOOM of the IHL. There were clearly many times that the talent level in the IHL far surpassed that of the AHL, but sice the NHL's blessing and financing were not behind the IHL, their payrolls for being the top 2nd tier league drove them to bankruptcy.

I do not want to see the AHL make that same mistake and go down the path of the IHL. In the minors, the real winners are those that turn a nice profit. If the NHL really goes away for awhile, or for good, the AHL can kiss it's behind goodbye. At the same time, the ECHL and UHL will be just fine, thank you. Damned good hockey at a fair price.

it would not go to the WHL. It would go to the winner of the memorial cup if they were going down that route.
