B-Man Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) FAHRENHEIT 451 — A WARNING FOR THE REST OF US;.............................. A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR THE LEFT: In the current Whitney Biennial, a very big-deal art show in New York, there is a 2016 painting depicting the body of Emmett Till, the Mississippi teenager murdered by white supremacists in 1955. Artist Dana Schutz, who is white, created the highly abstract image from famous open-casket photographs of Till at his funeral. Till’s mother wanted the world to see what white supremacists had done to her son. Those photographs served as a catalyst for civil rights protest, and are now an icon of American history. Schutz’s painting has been denounced by some black artists and others, because the painter is white. Hannah Black, a British-born black artist, has written an open letter demanding that the Whitney Museum not only take the painting down, but also destroy it. Here is the full text of her letter, which is drawing a number of signers: more at the link: Edited March 31, 2017 by B-Man

"If looks don't matter, where'd the mirror go?"

DC Tom Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 That is absolutely one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. Coincidentally, that was the sign on the mirror before they took it down.

BillsFanNC Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 https://www.wsj.com/articles/jonathan-haidt-on-the-cultural-roots-of-campus-rage-1491000676 Today justice means equal outcomes. “There are two ideas now in the academic left that weren’t there 10 years ago,” he says. “One is that everyone is racist because of unconscious bias, and the other is that everything is racist because of systemic racism.” That makes justice impossible to achieve: “When you cross that line into insisting if there’s not equal outcomes then some people and some institutions and some systems are racist, sexist, then you’re setting yourself up for eternal conflict and injustice.” If you lean left—even if you adhere to the campus orthodoxy, or to certain elements of it—you might consider how the failure to respect pluralism puts your own convictions at risk of a backlash. “People are sick and tired of being called racist for innocent things they’ve said or done,” Mr. Haidt observes. “The response to being called a racist unfairly is never to say, ‘Gee, what did I do that led to me being called this? I should be more careful.’ The response is almost always, ‘[Expletive] you!’ ” He offers this real-world example: “I think that the ‘deplorables’ comment could well have changed the course of human history.”
